Project Two

Unit Lesson Plan

Kristina Grinchuk
Topic: Measurement and Data

Subject Area: 2nd Grade Mathematics

1. Overview of Learners Second grade students in middle class area in Florida

Class size of 22
2 students with special needs
5 students whose first language was not English
Classroom includes students who learn visually, kinesthetically,
and aurally. However, most the class likes to learn kinesthetically.

2. Lesson Objectives & Students will be able to use a ruler to measure the length
Florida State Standards of an object
Students will be able to understand the different between
each of the measuring tools
Students will be able to measure an object using inches,
feet, centimeters, and meters
Students will be able to identify which measuring tool is
best to use in each situation
Students will be able to estimate the length of certain
objects
Students will measure objects to determine which object
is longer
Students will be able to correctly express the units of
measure
Students will be able to answer basic questions about
units of measurement

Florida State Standards:

Measure the length of an object to the nearest inch,
foot, centimeter, or meter by selecting and using appropriate tools
such as rulers, yardsticks, meter sticks, and measuring tapes.
(MAFS.2.MD.1.1)

Describe the inverse relationship between the size of a unit and

number of units needed to measure a given object. Example:
Suppose the perimeter of a room is lined with one-foot rulers.
Now, suppose we want to line it with yardsticks instead of rulers.
Will we need more or fewer yardsticks than rulers to do the job?
Explain your answer. (MAFS.2.MD.1.2)

Estimate lengths using units of inches, feet, yards, centimeters,

and meters. (MAFS.2.MD.1.3)

Measure to determine how much longer one object is than

another, expressing the length difference in terms of a standard-
length unit. (MAFS.2.MD.1.3)
3. Learning Environment Students will have an opportunity to work in pairs. There will be
a computer station set up for students to go to. They will have
their own supplies to complete any given task.

Room will be divided into center so that it is easier for students to

work in pairs

4. Teaching and Learning Introduce students to a yardstick, ruler and measuring

Strategies tape
Students will practice identifying which measuring tools
is suitable to measure certain objects
Introduce students to units of measure and how to
properly write the units of measure
Teacher will present several examples of how to use each
of the measurement tools
Students will complete a worksheet that asks them to
identify given measurements
Students will complete an activity that requires them to
measure different objects with different measurement
tools
Students will work in pairs in order measure different
objects
Students will work in pairs when they use the laptop to
complete math games about measurement
Students will create a foldable for inches, centimeters,
feet and meters
Teacher will review the progress of each student daily to
ensure that all students are understanding the content
given. Teachers will provide extra help to the students
that are struggling with the topic while the rest of the
class is given an additional activity regarding
measurement
5. Technologies Students will be able to use laptops to learn more about
measurements- math games about measurement can be used to
make the information concrete

6. Summative Evaluation Teacher will monitor the progresses of students as the activities
and Revision Plan are being done. Teacher will take notes as to who is progressing
the fastest and who need extra help. Teacher will review the
information as often as needed to make revisions that promote
greater understanding for students. Teacher will ask a peer to
review the lesson and ask for criticism of the lesson plan.
