Lesson Plan Format Modified for EDU 242 Field Assignment 2
Candidate Name: Lindsey DeFeo Course Code: EDU 242
Subject: English Language Arts Grade Level: 2nd Duration: 45-50 minutes
Lesson Topic: This class specifically was informing the students about the people they have researched for
Black History Month. My cooperating teacher gave the students a project that had them research people who
impacted the world in some way. Their task was to create a doll or representation of the person they
researched on as well as a brochure describing the person and how they were successful. This was a project
done at home with help from family members. It was then presented in class to peers so that students can
collaborate and learn about all of the people that were researched on.
Essential Questions (Linked to Big Ideas):
Learner Outcomes (Instructional Objectives):

Discuss with your field teacher what her/his intended learning objectives were for this lesson and list them
here.
- Students will be able to describe a person they learned about throughout the research process.
- Students will be able to research about one particular person to find out more about them.
- Students will be able to show creativity by creating what they think their person would look like. This
is done by creating a doll.
- Students will be able to fluently speak about the person they have researched about to their peers.
- Students will be able to build knowledge on their peers research and find out new information about
different people who have impacted the world in some way.
- Students will be able to ask and answer questions from their peers research and their teacher.

Instructional Procedures(s):

Explain (in detail) the lesson as it unfolded in the classroom.

1. Students are given the assignment two weeks in advanced. The teacher will stress the instructions of
the project. The instructions will also be given in Spanish as well.
2. Then the students will have two weeks to work on the project by themselves at home.
3. Two weeks later the students will have to bring in their projects that are due to class on that day.
4. The students will be given instructions that they have to take notes while peers are presenting and to
listen carefully because they will have to write a paragraph after the presentations are over.
5. Presentations begin.
6. Questions are asked throughout each presentation. During this time the projector is used to look up the
person that the student researched. This can be used to see their picture and see if their visual or doll
represents the person well. The computer is also used to find out if the information in the brochure is
accurate.
7. Presentations are over.
8. Students will write their paragraphs about what they have learned throughout this process and the
presentations.
9. The paragraphs are collected when the students are finished.
10. As students finish their paragraphs they move into math.

Addressing Learners Diverse Needs:

How did the teacher address the different needs of students?

- My teacher helped the students with diverse needs by allowing every student to bring a friend to the
front of the class with them when they presented.
- Also, she allowed the students who were ELL create their presentation in their first language if they
were not able to translate the information they found. If this was the case my teacher let the student
that was ELL have a friend read it in English if they spoke the same language. Most of the ELL
students in the class speak Spanish and there are students who speak Spanish fluently at home so they
were able to translate for their class presentation.
- The project instructions were given in Spanish and English.
- The project directions were orally given to the students who are ELL in their first language by a
student in the class that also speaks the language fluently. In this case, it is Spanish.

Formative/Summative Assessment:
Within the lesson, explain how the teacher assessed if the students met the objectives.

- Formative Assessment- Students taking notes on their peers presentations and writing a summary of
what they learned post presentations. This can be done in 5-6 sentences. The grade will be part of
participation.
- Summative Assessment- Students will be graded on the entire project. This will count in gradebook
for a project grade. This will be assessed using a rubric to help the students understand their grade.

How was technology used? How can it be improved?

- Technology was used in this lesson by using the projector to project the peoples picture and bio on
the board to see if the information is accurate. My teacher used a projector, a computer, as well as
google to help her throughout this part of the lesson.
- Technology can also be used if the information is all in one place. My teacher made copies of the
brochures to hand out to the students after the projects were presented but if there were computer
access at home she could also have made a spreadsheet or put the information all in one place as well.
This would be helpful because then the students would not have all of the pieces of papers with all of
the brochures. Also, she could have also made a PowerPoint. This way it can be accessed in school or
at home on a computer.
