Grade and Topic: 11th & 12th grade Cosmetology Length of Lesson: 2 hrs for 2 days

UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA:


The student will develop an understanding of OSHA safety standards for cosmetology.

LESSON OBJECTIVE:
After going to the OSHA website given and making a graphic organizer, students will be able to answer
a multiple choice test with at least 80% accuracy.

STANDARDS ADDRESSED:
TN State Design Principles of Cosmetology Standard 1.0
ITSE Standard 4.1 A

MATERIALS:
OSHA Research Worksheet (given by teacher)
P.C./Laptop/Mobile Device
OHSA Website https://www.osha.gov/SLTC/hairsalon/
Graphic Organizer Website http://www.inspiration.com/Freetrial

BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:


Gain a knowledge of safety in the cosmetology field.
Understanding why safety standards are set for the cosmetology field.
Understanding what happens if these standards are not followed.
Knowing when and which safety standards should be followed.
Gaining safety knowledge to be used every day.
If a student does not have access to the internet a home, he/she will be allowed to use the computers provided in
class.

PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:


Introduction: We will be learning safety standards provided by OSHA. These standards will insure that you
and your clients are protected at all times and keep you from getting sued or fined, if followed correctly.
Procedures:
Day 1
The teacher will give a brief lecture about safety standards. (30 mins.)
The teacher will give out an OSHA Research worksheet to the entire class. (5 mins.)
The students will be allowed to use the computer to access the OSHA website to find the info for the worksheet. (90
mins.)
The students will be in groups of two to a computer until the entire class has used to them.
The students will be told to do addtl. research for homework until worksheet is complete.
Day 2
The students will allowed addtl. time to research if they didnt have access to the internet at home. (30 mins.)
The teacher will give a brief introduction the graphic organizer website. (30 mins.)
The students will use the information collected on the worksheet to complete a creative graphic organizer.
The students will then be allowed to access the graphic organizer website to start their design. (1 hr)
The students will be in groups of two to a computer until the entire class has used to them.

Closure: After every student has completed their graphic organizers, the teacher will use them to teach the class more
about the OSHA safety standards for cosmetology.

ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE:
The students will be graded on the information on the graphic organizer and how creative the
information is displayed.
The students will be given a multiple choice test, at the end of the lesson, needing to make at least 80%
in order to have mastered this unit.

MODIFICATIONS:
If a student has not mastered this unit, he/she will be allowed to redo this unit when it comes around again.
Students who already mastered this unit will be working on practical applications from their practical sheets.
