Assignment 5

Winter 2017

The assignment is due Monday, February 27, at the beginning of the lecture.

Late submissions will not be accepted.

1. Find the general solutions of the following DEs and IVP

(a)

(b)

(c)

(d)

y

y 2y = e 2x + 3

y + 4y + 3y = 15e 2x + e x [Optional]

y + 4y + 3y = x sin(2x)

4y + 4y = e 2x ,

y(0) = 1, y (0) = 0 [Optional]

2. Give the form of the particular solution which you would use in the Method of Undetermined Coefficients for the DE. (Do not try to solve for the coefficients).

(D 3 + 2D 2 + 2D)[y] = 1 + 7 x 2 + (4 x)e x πxe x sin(x)

3. An Investment Model. Consider the model in which there are two industries, one producing capital goods and the other producing consumer goods.

Let q and p represent the price of the capital goods and consumer goods, respectively. Assume that p is a constant parameter.

Furthermore, assume that q = q(t) (t = time) follows the dynamic

 dq = (δ + ϕ)q − p(θ 0 − θ 1 K) (1) dt where δ, ϕ, θ 0 , θ 1 are some parameters and K is the capital stock that follows the dynamic dK α q − ϕK p = (2) dt for some constant α. (a) Show that the two 1st-order DEs in (1) and (2) can be merged into one 2nd-order DE d 2 K − δ dK dt − βK = −αθ 0 dt 2 (3) where β = ϕ 2 + δϕ + αθ 1 . [Hint: Start with differentiating (2) with respect to t, where dq dt is obtained from (1) and q is obtained from (2).] (b) Find the equilibrium capital stock K ∗ . (c) Under what conditions on δ and β will K exhibit an oscillatory behavior? Then, find the general (oscillatory) solution of the non-homogeneous DE (3). (d) Under what (further) condition(s) on δ will K, found in (c), approach K ∗ after long time? (e) Use (c) and (d) to sketch the solution K(t).

4. Use the Reduction of Order Method to find the general solutions of the following DEs

(a)

(b)

(c)

x 2 y + 2xy 6y = 0,

4x 2

y y = e x ,

[Hint to part (c): You should solve the homogeneous DE to obtain y 1 (x) = e x and y 2 (x) = e x . Then, use one of them, say, y 2 (x) = e x to find the particular solution y p (x) as indicated.]

y 1

= x 2 ln x

y + y = 0,

y 1 = x 1/2

y p (x) = u(x)e x

5. Use the Variation of Parameters Method to find the particular solutions for the following DEs. Then, write the general solutions

(a)

(b)

y

2y + 2y = e x tan x 2e x

e x + e x

y y =
