Essential question: How is technology utilized in the neonatal intensive care unit?

Working thesis statement: Babies in a neonatal intensive care unit require high levels of

technological care for survival.

Refined thesis: Babies in a neonatal intensive care unit require high levels of technological care

such as incubators and ventilators for survival.

Brown, Melissa K., and Robert M. DiBlasi. "Mechanical Ventilation of the Premature Neonate."

Ebscohost. Respiratory Care, Sept. 2011. Article. 22 Feb. 2017.

Invasive mechanical ventilation for premature babies is important for supporting preterm

neonates with lung diseases. This technology is a lifesaving intervention for young infants with

respiratory problems. Many different ventilation modes available to optimize mechanical

ventilation. Evidence in the article shows that volume-targeted ventilation modes are more

beneficial than traditional pressure control modes in providing better lung protection. Over the

years many mechanical ventilations have evolved. These new technologies are being used daily

to help improve the care of premature infants. I chose this article because it explains how

invasive mechanical ventilation is used and how it helps prevent lung diseases in premature

newborns in the neonatal intensive care unit.

Forbes, Hemenway. "New Incubators Make a Difference." Ebscohost. Waterloo-Cedar, 10 Oct.

2016. Article. 22 Feb. 2017.

Meta Hemenway Forbes article describes how Giraffe incubators make it possible to

care for babies delivered as early as 30 weeks. The Giraffe incubators help monitor and control

temperature, weight, moisture, noise, and touch of premature infants. Incubators keep baby's

temperature stable, prevent dehydration and weight loss, and stabilizes baby's heart rate. The

Giraffe incubators also has a built-in scale to keep an eye on the baby's weight accurately.

Incubators are extremely helpful in taking extra care of premature newborns. I chose this article

because it describes one of the most important machines in helping newborns survive.

Hag, Ehsan, Muhammad Sadiq, Hassan Javed, and Manmood Farnat. "A Low Cost Digital Infant

Incubator." Ebscohost. Pakistan Journal of Medical Science, July 2011. Article. 22 Feb.

2017.

Neonatal incubators are devices consisting of a rigid box-line enclosure in which an

infant is monitored for medical care. Incubators provide a safe, isolated, monitored environment

for newborns born prematurely. A country like Pakistan has thought of developing an incubator

that is easily repairable and cheap to maintain. The first modern incubator invented was called a

lion incubator. This device includes regulation of air temperature, powered heater, a fan to

circulate warm air, container for water to add humidity, and a control valve for added oxygen.

The incubators have to be made transparent that way the NICU nurses have easy access to

monitoring and observing the infants. This technology is being improved throughout generations

to further improve the care of premature infants. I chose this article because it provides facts

about incubators and how incubators evolve, making them low cost for some countries like

Pakistan.

Jamsa, Kaisa, and Jamsa, Timo. "Technology in Neonatal Intensive Care a Study on Parents

Experiences" Ebscohost. Technology & Death Care, 1998. Article. 22 Feb. 2017.

Technology is an important role in the neonatal intensive care unit. Parents find the

technology with wiring, tubing, and blinking lights frightening. The technology is unfamiliar to

parents and questions arise in this situation. Even though the technology is highly required in ill

sick newborns, parents fear that the technology will interfere with the relationship of the parents

and baby. In the article studies show that some parents have a negative experience with the

technology in the neonatal intensive care unit. Some interviews were taken to see what the

parents thought about the technology and equipment in the NICU. One parent said, ... it was

terrible i just wanted to run away I have never seen anything like that only in the movies,

where it (?) Always comes off in conclusion the parents experiences with technology should

be considered in the development of machines, equipment, and devices in the neonatal intensive

care unit.

Some baby's need special care before going home. In this article it explains how the

neonatal intensive care unit is the perfect place for those ill sick newborns to go. Some

pregnancies are high-risk which requires the help of the neonatal intensive care unit. The NICU

has high-tech equipment such as tubes, ventilators, IVs, incubators, and monitors. Newborns

require different types of help associated with different types of technology. Neonatal intensive

care unit incubators regulate the baby's body temperature, nasogastric tube delivers milk into the

baby's stomach through the nostril, IVs provide fluid to keep baby's hydrated and for the delivery

of medication, and monitor tap which keeps track of baby's vital signs. Although the babies are

surrounded by machines, it is important for mothers to bond with the baby's. I chose this article

because it explains the different types of machines and how the machines are utilized in the

neonatal intensive care unit.

Schwartz, Rachel M., Janet H. Muri, Mary B. Orerpeck, and John C. Pezzullo. "Use of

High-Technology Care Among Women with High-Risk Pregnancies in the United

States." Ebscohost. Maternal & Child Health Journal, Mar. 2000. Web. 22 Feb. 2017.

High-tech care is an important factor in the reduction of infants. The three levels of

technological assessment. Level one is no intermediate or NICU beds, no high-tech OB services,

and this NICU level is not designated. Level two is the presence of intermediate beds, the NICU

beds with level two designation, and an indication of OB high-risk services. Level three is the

use of NICU beds with or without intermediate beds, the presence of a high-risk OB, and level

three NICU designation. High-risk pregnancies have a large range of medical conditions that

require high technological care for newborns. I chose this article because it discusses the use of

high technological care among women with high-risk pregnancies.
