Program Goals and Objectives
In order for the Grand Terrace High School Boys Soccer Program to achieve
success this season, a winning attitude MUST be developed throughout the
entire program. There are 5 components of a winning attitude:

1. Hard work: This is a result of consistent effort, not effort occasionally.

A consistent work ethic allows one to become stronger mentally,
resulting in increased confidence. To be successful one must be
confident in themselves and their teammates.

2. Discipline: This is doing what you are supposed to do, when you are
supposed to do it, both on and off the field. Having composure on the
field when the game is on the line is a sign of discipline. All successful
teams have discipline and most unsuccessful teams lack discipline.
Discipline is a daylong, year around commitment to success.

3. Commitment: We need players to be committed as a student-athlete

EVERYDAY of the season, and throughout the offseason too. This
commitment is not only to your team, but also to your family, to your
studies, and to your friends. Holding each other accountable is very
important!

4. Teamwork: Everyone must play as one unit. The good of the team
needs to come before individual desires. Selfishness can destroy any
teams success. Each program, from its most talented to its least
talented player, has a role to fulfill and each player needs to accept his
role within the framework of the team. Each player needs to work to
their maximum potential to benefit the good of the team.

5. Improvement: No one is ever good enough that they cannot improve

their game. Players either get better or worse; they rarely ever stay
the same. Every individual and team must strive to improve daily or
that person or team will regress in ability.
MUCH MORE CAN BE ACCOMPLISHED WITH A LARGE GROUP OF
AVERAGE TALENTED INDIVIDUALS WHO PLAY AS A TEAM THAN WITH
A SMALL GROUP OF HIGHLY TALENTED INDIVIDUALS WHO PLAY FOR
THEMSELVES! IMAGINE WHAT CAN BE ACCOMPLISHED IF A HIGHLY
TALENTED GROUP PLAYS AS A TEAM!
Coaching Staff Goals and Objectives:
1. To cultivate a fun and challenging player-centered learning
environment that encourages player and team development
2. To bring a passion and energy to all coaching responsibilities.
3. To be adequately prepared with practice and game plans.
4. To be ready and on-time for practices and games.
5. To continue to grow and develop as a coach by pursuing appropriate
coaching education, certifications and licenses.
6. To model integrity, sportsmanship, discipline, responsibility, humility,
teamwork, commitment and respect.
7. To hold coaching staff and players accountable to the highest
standards of sportsmanship.
8. To foster the technical, tactical, physical and psycho-social
development of each player.
9. To aid players interested in playing in college find a college that is the
right fit.

Player Goals and Objectives:

1. To be ready and on-time for practices and games.
2. To train at the highest level possible every practice.
3. To compete at the highest level possible every game.
4. To improve technical, tactical, physical, and psycho-social skills (in and
out of season).
5. To commit to team development and success.
6. To represent the Grand Terrace High School Boys Soccer Program with
pride and respect.
7. To treat opponents, teammates, coaches, referees, school officials, and
fans with respect.
8. To develop the life skills of integrity, sportsmanship, discipline,
responsibility, humility, teamwork, commitment and respect.
9. To strive for academic excellence and academic eligibility.
10. To adhere to the rules of Grand Terrace High School and the Boys
Soccer Program.
11. To have fun and develop a life-long love and passion for soccer.
SPORTS DO NOT BUILD CHARACTER THEY REVEAL IT!

GTHS Boys Soccer Team Rules and

Expectations

Team Philosophy: Our job as coaches is to help our students become winners.
Success is not always reflected on the scoreboard at the end of a match, nor
in the win-loss column. Success is reflected in the hard work, the honesty
and the desire the athletes put forth in making themselves better. Even
though we cannot always win, we can always be winners.

Being a part of a team requires commitment and hard work. Discipline and
responsibility is also important. Being a member of this team, you will be
expected to be committed to the coaches, your teammates and adhere to all
player expectations.

Expectations are:
1. Be on time for all games, practices and functions. Being on time
shows respect for your coaches and teammates. You should
always be on the field ready to go by the established time.
Should you
2. Give 100% effort and focus at all times. You will develop as a
player faster and achieve more success when you give your best
100% of the time. Effort is more important than execution.
Through hard work and repetition, execution will come.
3. Display respect for the game and others. You will be expected to
show respect to your teammates, coaches, referees, opposing
players and your parents. Negative attitudes or disrespect
will not be tolerated.
4. You are to do what is expected of you. For teams to be
successful, every player must do what is best for the team. This
means playing wherever you are asked and doing what is asked
of you. You may not always agree, but you must always do what
is asked of you.
5. Support and encourage your teammates. A soccer team can
be an extended family. Successful teams are the teams that work
hard, commit to excellence, and enjoy being together. You will be
expected to support your teammates through encouragement
and acceptance.
6. Players will be expected to make every attempt to include
teammates in social circles and conversations. Players will be
expected to refrain from developing social cliques within the
team structure.
7. Commitment to the team, coaches and team goals is expected.
This means being at all team practices, games and functions. A
team is only successful when it is a unit. Soccer requires
commitment and sacrifice. You will be asked to respect this
commitment by being 100% committed to the goals of this team.
8. Players must understand that playing time and positions are
earned through hard work and performance. While we commit to
playing every player as much as we can, some players will
receive more playing time. This additional time is determined by
the players approach to practices, games and their
performance.

Team Rules and Policies:

1. Practice times/Punctuality: Practice will be from 3-5 pm or 3:30-
5:30 pm Monday-Thursday unless noted otherwise. Practice
schedule will be adjusted around games, with most weeks
consisting of no more than three practices. All players must be
on the practice field on time, ready to start warming up. This
does not mean players can arrive at 3:00 pm and start putting on
their gear. Players must tape, use restroom, etc. prior to practice
start time. There is no excuse to be late or unprepared at the
start of practice.
2. Players are expected to be at practice 100% of the time! Players
cannot expect to improve individually and as a team if they dont
show up. There are some exceptions:
A. Player needs to attend after school tutoring to improve a
failing grade. Players who stay after school to finish tests
or school work with a teacher must bring a written note
from that teacher the same day, indicating the time spent
in the classroom and when the player left the room to
come to practice. No verbal excuses will be accepted.
Although we believe doing work with a teacher after school
is very important, players must understand that if this
process is repeated too many times, it is a sign that the
player is falling behind in his studies. If this is the case, the
player must reevaluate his priorities. School always comes
before soccer.
B. Player is sick and stays home from school that day.
C. A player needs to visit a physician, dentist, etc. due to an
injury or unforeseen occurrence.
D. A player has a family emergency.
E. The player is absent from school. Players are not allowed to
participate in practices or games when this occurs.
F. A player needs to miss practice and/or games due to
religious observations.
3. If you are going to miss practice for one of the excused absences
listed above, you must call, text or email the coach the night
before or the morning of the practice day youre going to miss.
4. Players must follow the rules of the team and the ones set forth
by the Colton Joint Unified School District and Grand Terrace High
School. Players who are disciplined by the school for breaking
school rules will be subject to the school disciplinary process and
any athletic disciplinary actions that may apply. Players must
conduct themselves in a way that shows their commitment to
represent themselves, their families, their school and the Grand
Terrace Boys Soccer Program with pride, dignity and respect.
5. Consequences- Rules violations may result in a variety of
disciplinary actions. Refer to pages seven and eight for specific
consequences.
6. Once practices and/or game-day preparations begins, every
player is expected to act in a disciplined, soccer focused manner.
Remember, the way you practice is the way you will play in your
games:
a) Every moment on the soccer field presents an opportunity
to practice a skill. Therefore, every free moment should be
spent practicing juggling, dribbling, passing, etc.
b) When we are practicing a skill or running a drill in practice,
the rules of soccer apply (unless otherwise noted).
Therefore, there will be no pushing, tripping, tackling or
other actions that would not be allowed during a soccer
match.
c) Soccer is a game generally played without hands. Unless
we are practicing throw-ins or juggling, there is no need to
handle the ball with your hands during practice.
d) Every player is expected to give full attention to coaches
when they speak or demonstrate a drill.
e) Coaches will often give individual instruction to a player, or
occasionally scold a player for some reason. In these
situations, the player is expected to acknowledge the
instruction and attempt to change his behavior or actions
in a positive manner. Any negative reactions to these
situations will not be tolerated.
7. Good sportsmanship and fair play are important aspects of
participation in athletics. All players, coaches and family
members are expected to act accordingly always.
8. Discipline is a primary key to the success of any team and/or
individual athlete. AS coaches, we will attempt to develop
individual and team discipline in reasonable manner. Soccer is a
team sport and therefore the team suffers from a lack of
discipline from any of its members. Therefore, do not be
surprised if the entire team is disciplined for the negative actions
of an individual player or groups of players during practices. Any
individuals who consistently break any of the rules stated in this
packet will be subject to individual discipline, up to and including
suspension from games and other team activities to expulsion
from the team.
9. We strongly urge parents to place the burden of responsibility for
compliance with these rules on the players. Players need to
understand their responsibilities as well as the consequences for
lack of compliance. This is part of the individual and team
discipline we are trying to develop. The Team Rules are the rules.
Their purpose is to maintain a functioning, cohesive, unified
TEAM.

Attention: To participate in the Boys soccer program here at Grand Terrace

High School, you must read the following and agree to sign this contract. By
signing this contract your signature will represent your understanding of the
procedures set by this program and the expectations set by the coaching
staff. The purpose of this contract is a set code of accountability for the
players. We would like the players to experience and understand the
importance of following a system. This type of system is not just for soccer,
but to prepare them for life beyond high school.

1. All players within this program will adhere to all the school policies
regarding conduct, integrity, and discipline in and out of the season.
2. Player Communication: Now that the players have reached high
school it is their responsibility to communicate to the coaches
regarding any issues pertaining to soccer. Parents should allow their
sons to experience how to communicate to their coaches and how to
be responsible for themselves. Players need to learn this skill because
sooner than later they are going to have to speak for themselves. This
behavior will help their growth as a young man. So, parents, let your
sons do the communicating!
3. All players are required to have a positive attitude towards their
teammates, coaches, opponents, referees, administration, faculty,
fans, and their peers throughout the entire season. Each player is to
practice the concept We are a TEAM FIRST and an individual second!!
Each player is expected to encourage and motivate each other with a
positive approach.

4. Attendance: All players are required to attend all practices, film

sessions, team meetings and games during the entire season. There
will be No Exceptions, unless the reason warrants the absence. The
Coaching Staff will decide if the absence is excused.

a) 1st Absence: Loss of starting position and game time or playing

time all together.
b) 2nd Absence: Loss of starting position and game time or playing
time all together
c) 3rd Absence: Suspended from the team
d) 4th Absence: Dismissed from the team
Note: If you are sick or injured you must contact the coaching staff
immediately. If the staff is not contacted it will be considered unexcused! If
you are injured, you are still required to be at practice. Please understand,
if you do not practice, you do not play! Playing time is earned in
practice! There are no assurances, for both teams. Time served in the
program will also not be a factor for playing time or advancing to the next
level.

5. Punctuality: All players are required to be on time for practices,

games, and any other soccer related events. Arriving at the start of
practice is unacceptable and will be considered as being late.
Consequences for being late are as follows:

a) 1st Time Late: Player will receive verbal warning for 1st infraction
b) 2nd Time Late: Loss of starting position and game time or playing
time all together.
c) 3rd Time Late: Loss of starting position and game time or playing
time all together
d) 4th Time Late: Suspended from team
e) 5th Time Late: Dismissed from team
If the infraction is serious the student will be dismissed from the
team immediately.

6. Dress Code for Training: The required dress code for training during
the season is practice gear that was purchased by the players or
appropriate training attire. If a player attends a training session not
dressed properly, he will not be able to participate in training.

7. Discipline During School: If a player receives a detention or

suspension during school the following consequences will apply:

Detentions:
a) 1st Time: Loss of starting position and game time or playing time
all together
b) 2nd Time: Loss of starting position and game time or playing time
all together
c) 3rd Time: Suspended from the team
d) 4th Time: Dismissed from team
Suspension*:
a) 1st Time: Suspended from the team
b) 2nd Time: Dismissed from team

* May be subject to expulsion from the team

8. All players will travel on the bus to and from games, No Exceptions!
While traveling on the bus, you are permitted to listen to music on an
iPod or any other device. But you will have headsets and the volume
will be set so only you can hear the music.
Game Protocol:
Players are expected to conduct themselves in a disciplined and respectful
manner at all games. Players represent the Grand Terrace High School Boys
Program, Grand Terrace High School, the Colton Joint Unified School District,
their community and their families; as such they should represent them with
pride and respect. The following guidelines are expected to be followed for
all games:
1. On game days, players will wear team shirt, dress shirt/tie or whatever
the captains/coaches agree upon to school. There will be consequences
at the next practice for failure to comply.
2. Players should arrive and be ready to preform (1 hour before kickoff for
home games and at scheduled bus departure time (class dismissal @
12:45 pm, 1:15 pm bus departure from Titan Way) for away games.
3. Come with all required equipment; players will wear white
jerseys/socks for home games and black jersey/socks for away games.
4. While at games we sit as a team; only those listed on the roster may
sit with us.
5. Only captains and coaches speak to the referees.
6. Equipment should be placed in your bag and organized behind the
benches before warm-ups
7. Respect the bench areas and keep them clean and orderly.
8. Players must wear practice pinnies and remain in the bench area when
not playing in a game.
9. Players who are not in the game are expected to be paying attention to
the game and cheer in a positive and sportsmanship-like manner; no
horseplay will be tolerated.
10. Realize we are substituting for a purpose; giving the coach staff
attitude is a quick way to reduce your playing time.
11. Run on and off the field when substituted, at half time and at the
end of the game.
12. Do not ask when or if you can go in; if and when the coaching
staff decides to play you it is at the discretion of the coaching staff. If
you want to discuss your playing time, game day is not the day to do
it; set up a time with the coaches before or after practice.
13. During half time, the coaching staff will give you a few minutes
to express your input, the remaining time is for the coaching staff;
players should be quiet and focused at this time.
14. Sportsmanship is expected at all times. This means during the
game, at the conclusion of game hand shakes (and say Good Game-
and only this) with the opposing team; shake hands with the referees;
thank fans at the conclusion of the game as well.
15. Players will not be released to go home from games until all
equipment is accounted for and put away properly; captains will
confirm this and coaches will release you.

Contacting a coach: We have an open-door policy in our soccer program,

meaning if a player has a concern and would like to address it with the
coach, he has the right to do so. We ask that parents let their players come
talk to us on first as it teaches them responsibility, before a parent comes to
talk to us directly.

Other Important Information:

Players must maintain 2.0 GPA at 1st Quarter grading period and 1st
semester grading period. 1st semester ends December 15, 2016.
Players with a GPA below 2.0 will become ineligible and removed from
