    The Review on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) has completed its work and this website will no longer be updated. The legacy of the Review will be maintained by its sponsor organisations, the Wellcome Trust and UK Department of Health. The AMR Review was commissioned in 2014 to analyze the global problem of antimicrobial resistance and propose solutions. Over two years it engaged stakeholders to understand and address the economic and social challenges of drug-resistant infections from new drugs to diagnostics to agriculture. In May 2016, it released its final report with recommendations for global cooperation to slow the development of drug-resistant infections.

    analysetheglobalproblemofrisingdrugresistanceandproposeconcreteactionstotackleitinternationally.TheReviewonAMRwasjointly
    supportedbytheUKGovernmentandWellcomeTrust,althoughoperatedwithfullindependencefromboth.Establishedasatwoyear,timelimited
    process,theReviewengagedwidelywithinternationalstakeholderstounderstandandproposesolutionstotheproblemofdrugresistantinfections
    fromaneconomicandsocialperspective,andproduceditsfinalreportandrecommendationsinthesummerof2016.

    Therealimplicationsofspreadingdrugresistancewillbefelttheworldover,withdevelopingcountriesandlargeemergingnationsbearingthebrunt
    ofthisproblem.Routinesurgeriesandminorinfectionswillbecomelifethreateningonceagainandthehardwonvictoriesagainstinfectious
    diseasesofthelastfiftyyearswillbejeopardized.Hospitalstaysandexpenses,forbothpublichealthcareprovidersandforoutofpocketpayers
    willincreasesignificantly.Drugresistantinfectionsarealreadyontherisewithnumberssuggestingthatupto50,000livesarelosteachyearto
    antibioticresistantinfectionsinEuropeandtheUSalone.Globally,atleast700,000dieeachyearofdrugresistanceinillnessessuchasbacterial
    infections,malaria,HIV/Aidsortuberculosis.

    TheReviewonAMRhasbeenassessingsolutionstoavoidtheseterriblecosts,producingthematicpaperslookingatallaspectsoftheproblems
    raisedbydrugresistanceincludingthesupplyofnewdrugs,theuseofdiagnostics,surveillance,infectioncontrol,alternativetreatmentsandthe
    useofantibioticsinagriculture.ThesethemeswillformthebasisofthefinalreporttotheUKPrimeMinister,withrecommendationsforglobal
    solutions,bythesummerof2016.
