School: Evans Junior High School
Lesson Date &
Time:

Instructions: In the boxes below, include the relevant information concerning your
planned lesson.

Purpose/ The students have just learned in math about mean median and mode, they are starting
Rationale to look at the different kinds of graphs. To emphasize the importance of graphs in
literature, students will get to do a short research project on a subject of their choice
that involves research represented in a graph. It will give them an insight into a few
different kinds of graphs, and give real world examples of how to use them before
they are taught how to create them.

Objectives Students will have a topic and at least one piece of evidence for their project.
Students will use language to describe what they find in their research
Students will write what they have found and what they are researching on the exit
slip
Students will ask questions if they need any assistance

Academic
Language Scholarly journal An education based journal intended to show research and be used
as a resource
Quantitative data data represented in numbers rather than words

Standards CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.6.2
Interpret information presented in diverse media and formats (e.g.,
visually, quantitatively, orally) and explain how it contributes to a
topic, text, or issue under study.

learners Communicate information, ideas and concepts necessary
for academic success in the content area of Mathematics

Assessmen Formative:
ts Exit slip the exit slip will ask for their topic, school subject closest related to the
topic as well as the site they got their research from to see if it is reliable or not.
Work done in google classroom Because work will be done in google classroom
the instructor will have all work done in in a place they can check progress at any
time

Opening - Start with a question on the board for table groups to consider
Engagem asking when and where have you seen graphs in things you
ent read both in and out of school
Students will have a few minutes before talking about it as a
class.

Instruction To start I will give a short talk on how important research will be for the rest of
al their educational career, and how important it is in real life when trying to be
Strategie informed later in life. Being able to read quantitative statistics in the form of
s graphs is very important.
(Procedur Students will then be given a resource called ebscohost. This website is full of
es) good sources including scholarly articles a 6th grader may have never seen before.
The good thing about ebscohost is that it is made and has resources collected
specifically for students!
Instruct students that online sites that have .gov or .edu websites are almost always
the best place to find real research if they choose not to use the website provided. If
there is an ad on the page it is probably not a very reliable source as well as the fact
that Wikipedia is not a source, and neither is google. Only websites the information
actually originated from. They did a min workshop on internet use in the library at
the beginning of the year so they should know good sources from bad sources.
We will transition to the library to start researching, and allow students to also use
text sources. They will start by choosing any topic that interests them, and look
through different articles on ebscohost if on the computer, or the library page to
Students will have to do additional research on how to read the graphs they find
which will give them background knowledge on some of the things they will look
at during their probability unit they are in now in math.

Closure Students will be asked at the end of class if they have any cool
graphs they would like to share they have not seen before, or any
statistics they were surprised to see. Students may use the
internet, the library, other students, or the instructor for help if
they get stuck.

Modificatio Online the students may choose any site they wish to choose,
ns/ even in another language if reading is easier for them in another
Differentia language. Their writing however should be in English.
tion Students have the opportunity to use print or online media
sources
Students can also pick a topic that is both academically, socially,
and culturally relevant to their own interests.
