A7 How does internet usage affect GPA?

Introduction

What topic did you decide to research?

We decided to research if internet usage negatively or positively affects a students GPA,

depending on the amount of free time they have while also depending on the amount of hours

students devote for homework.

What questions did you ask?

- Approximately how many hours a day do you spend on the Internet (including streaming,
social media, etc.)?

- Choose the activity you are most likely to partake in on the Internet.

- How many credit hours are you taking this semester?

- How many hours a day do you spend studying or doing homework?

- What is your cumulative GPA?

What we looked for:

- Does the amount of time a student spends on the Internet (not doing homework) affect

their GPA?

- What are students usually doing on the Internet?

- Do certain activities on the Internet affect GPA more than others?

- Does the amount of time spent on the Internet correlate to the amount of time spent on

homework?

Most Common Activities

First we were curious on what type of activities students were using as their form of Internet

usage. We received about 126 responses with the activities. Weighing in as the highest type of

activity at 57 students choosing social media, 55 students choosing streaming, 9 choosing other,

4 choosing their activity as checking the news, and only 1 online shopping. The gradual degrease

from social media to streaming became apparent and distant once the number of respondents

changed from 55 to 9.

Average Time Spent in Internet

The average time spent on the Internet did not have a huge difference between the highest GPA

Group which is the 4.0 GPA Group and the lowest which is the 1.0 - 2.9 GPA Group. When

comparing average time spent on the Internet and GPA averages, there was not such a huge

dramatic change in the results. As an example, GPA Groups between an average GPA of 1.0 -

2.9 had an average of 6.74 daily hours spent on the internet. Whereas the GPA Group with an

average of a 4.0 GPA spent no more than an average of 4.2 daily hours on the Internet.

Average Time Spent on Homework

The average time spent on homework had a gradual occurring dip. The about of hours spent on

homework got gradually smaller as the GPA got lower. The 1.0 - 2.9 Group spent the least

amount of hours on homework only spending about 3.17 hours on homework while the second

highest GPA Group which have a GPA of 3.0 - 3.9 spent 3.33 hours on homework.

As predicted, the highest GPA Group with a 4.0 or higher spent the most time on homework,

which was about 3.4 hours on the daily. It seemed as if the lower the GPA averages got, the

lower the time used on homework was being spent.
