Learning Experience Plan

Subject: US History Grade level: 8th grade

Unit: World War II Length of LEP (days/periods/minutes): 1

Period

Topic: Island Hopping Strategy

Content Standards: (include only standards addressed in this LEP)

8.5 WORLD WAR II: The aggression of the Axis powers threatened United States security and led to its
entry into World War II. The nature and consequences of warfare during World War II transformed the
United States and the global community. The damage from total warfare and atrocities such as the
Holocaust led to a call for international efforts to protect human rights and prevent future wars.
8.5b From 1939 to 1941, the United States government tried to maintain neutrality while providing aid to
Britain but was drawn into the war by the Japanese attack on pearl Harbor. The United States fought a war
on multiple fronts. At home, the economy was converted to war production, and essential resources were
rationed to ensure adequate supplies for military use.
o Students will examine American involvement in World War II including the American strategy in
the Pacific and the invasion of Normandy on D-Day.

President Roosevelts decision to enter the war. In this lesson, students will
learn how the United States fought the Japanese military, from the first few
battles until the Japanese surrendered.

Direct Instruction (input, modeling, check for understanding)

Students will not receive much direct instruction during this lesson that
covers content. Instead, students will be instructed to complete the web
quest, and to follow the directions on the teacher prepared handout.

Guided Practice (how students will demonstrate their grasp of new learning)

Students will work individually or with a partner in order to complete the

web quest.

Independent Practice (what students will do to reinforce learning of the lesson)

Approximately 10 minutes prior to the end of the period, the class will
regroup and share their findings. Students who did not get the correct
answer, or may not have finished in time, will have the opportunity to fix
their work.

Closure (action/statement by teacher designed to bring lesson presentation to an appropriate

close)

An exit ticket will be completed by each student:

1. Does the order and location of the battles in which we talked about
displays a pattern?

2. Do you believe that the strategy of Island Hopping was necessary? Why
or why not?

For homework, students will complete a narrative summary frame, in order

to wrap up the Pacific theater during World War II.
