GOOD DEEDS DAY 2017: SETTING A
HIGH BAR FOR THE FUTURE
You all made such a difference!! Thanks to all of you,
Agudas Achim had an incredibly successful first
congregation-wide Good Deeds Day. Good Deeds Day is an
international program of mitzvot and tikkun olam sponsored
in our area by the Jewish Federation of Greater Washington
and Agudas Achim was a major participant! We had over
200 adults and kids participate in a wide range of activities.
Together, you removed five bags of trash and three bags of
recycling, a saw blade, bicycle skeleton, and part of an office
chair from the stream at Four Mile Run, refurbished the
mulch and prepared the childrens garden beds at the Alive
Child Development Center, knitted hats and blankets for
babies at the Fairfax Childrens Hospital NICU, and
assembled bunkbeds, dressers, and other furniture for
ALIVE House. Fifteen of our talented youth performed an
amazing concert for the seniors at the Fountains Assisted Living Center. During religious school our wonderful students made
200 pet toys for local animal shelters, wrapped 300 packages of treats for a local teen center and a homeless shelter, made 300
peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for two local homeless shelters, made 35 baby blankets for babies at the Fairfax Childrens
Hospital NICU, and wrote 60 letters to patients at Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem. They even provided service to Agudas
Achim by cleaning the sanctuary and the kippah boxes in
anticipation of Pesach.
You also answered the call for donations, and as a result
we have a big box of used cell phones to give to the Jewish
Coalition Against Domestic Violence, lots of diapers for the
D.C. Diaper bank, womens hygiene products and bras for
Support the Girls, and lots of towels and sheets for Guest
House, a transitional housing program for women who have
completed their prison sentences.
Thank you to all the volunteers who served as project
leaders Shulamith Shafer, Leib Kaminsky, Sandy Marks,
Howard Frank, and Hazzan Dienstfrey - and to all who helped
Sunday morning checking people in, taking photographs,
assisting with the religious school students, or otherwise doing
whatever needed to be done: Chaya Silver, Marya Runkle,
Yona Lindenbaum, Patti Rounsevell, Robin Fradkin, Ari Lindenbaum, Bekah, Hersch and Katherine Allen. Thank
you to all the religious school staff who taught lessons to over 100 students on the Jewish values at the heart of this important
work. Thanks also to Jada Bromberg, Jared Cohen, Rena Cooper, Akiva Dienstfrey, Dassi Dienstfrey, Lev Dienstfrey,
Margalit Dienstfrey, Henry Drembus, Hanna Ebert, Evan Fagen, Jeremy Fagen, Alex Fogelson, Josh Gordon, Arielle
Guedalia and Mollie Shichman who shared their musical talents with the seniors at the Fountains.
We are interested in your thoughts on how we can make our Good
Deeds Day event even better next year. Please email the co-chairs
with your ideas about what went well and what you thought we
could do better or differently next year. You have inspired us to
make this an annual event at Agudas Achim.
Thank you all for making a difference and inspiring others to
do tikkun olam (repair the world). Together we can inspire social
change by feeding the hungry, caring for the earth, and helping those
in need.
