TT3 LESSON 35 CARTOON (FILLING IN)

1 Loudspeaker: Ladies and gentlemen, this is flight 408 to Honolulu. Be sure that all
hand luggage fits completely under the seat in front of you or in the overhead
compartments.
loudspeaker n. (WIA) an electronic device which makes speech, music, etc. sound louder.
gentleman n. pl. gentlemen a very polite word for a man.
hand luggage n. (WIA) carry-ons.
overhead compartment n. (WIA) inside an aircraft, a place above a passengers head in
which he or she can put hand luggage.
2 Loudspeaker: In a few minutes we will be taking of. Our flight time from Los Angeles this
evening will be 5 hours and 35 minutes to Honolulu. Our arrival time in Honolulu will be
approximately 1:00 a.m. local time.
Be sure that your seat belts are securely fastened and that your seats are in the upright
position.
arrival n. 1. the act of arriving. their arrival wasnt expected until evening. adj. 2. of or
related to an arrival. The arrival ceremony for the visiting president was canceled for
safety reasons.
approximately adv. about. There were approximately thirty thousand people at the
football game.
securely adv. properly, safety. When you leave your house to go on vacation, make sure
all the doors and windows are securely locked.
upright position vertical position. Humans walk in an upright position.
3 Gloria: Do you want to put that box in the overhead compartment? I dont think its going
to fit under that seat.
Lee: No, no, thats OK. Im sure theres got a way. You see, it fits!
Gloria: Well, suit yourself.
suit yourself do whatever you want. You can eat now or you can eat later. Suit yourself, I
wouldnt go swimming if I were you, but suit yourself.
4 Flight attendant 1: Could you straighten your seat, please? Please put your hand
baggage completely under the seat in front of you or in the overhead compartments. If it
doesnt fit, we can put it in the closet at the front of the aircraft. Could you fasten your
seat belts, please?
flight attendant n. (WIA) the person working on a plane who serves meals, gives the
passengers safety instructions, etc.
straighten v.t. to put in an upright position.
hand baggage n. (WIA) hand luggage.
aircraft n. any machine such as an airplane, helicopter, etc. that is able to fly.
5 Gloria: Yeah, its kind of chilly in here.
Lee: Wow, thanks a lot.
Gloria: Are you heading for Honolulu?
Lee: Yeah, how about you?
Gloria: Yeah, I live there. By the way, my names Gloria.
Lee: Im Lee. Nice to meet you.
chilly adj. cold enough to make you fell uncomfortable.
6 Lee: Gloria, can you do me a big favor?
Gloria: What is it?
Lee: Hold my tray for a minute and keep an eye out for the flight attendant and let me
know when you see her coming.
Gloria: Sure, Lee, but why?
Lee: This is no time to ask questions. Wilbur is probably starving.
Gloria: Wilbur? Is your box named Wilbur?
Lee: No, my cat. My cats named Wilbur.
Gloria: Your cat!
Lee: Shhh
tray n. (WIA) A tray is used to carry or hold things especially food and drinks.
keep an eye out for When you keep an eye out for someone, you stay alert so that you
will notice that person.
starving adj. extremely hungry. I havent eaten anything since yesterday. Im starving.
See starve.
starve v.i. starved, starving to become very weak and sick because of hunger.
7 Gloria: How did you get a cat through the security check?
Lee: Just lucky, I guess. There were a bunch of suitcases and bags going through the x-ray
machine and I guess Wilbur just looked like a pile of clothes or something.
security n. what is done to keep a place and the people inside it safe. See customs.
security check n. the place inside an airport where passengers and their baggage are
checked to make sure that no one carries anything dangerous onto an aircraft.
customs n. the place at a border or in an international airport where people arriving from
a foreign country have their bags checked to make sure they arent bringing anything into
the country that isnt allowed and where they pay taxes on items as necessary. I cant wait
to see England. I hope it doesnt take too long to get through customs.
x-ray n. (WIA) a special kind of picture which shows us the inside of things we cant see
with our own eyes.
x-ray machine n. (WIS) a machine which makes x-rays.
pile n (WIA) a numbr of things lying one on top of another. John came out of the library
carrying a pile of books.
8 Gloria: Why didnt you just check him?
Lee: Check him? No, no one else is going to handle my baby. He stays with me.
Gloria: But, Lee, youre going to have the same problem coming back. Trying to smuggle
a cat on an airplane a second time is really pushing your luck.
Lee: Well, I guess Ill just have to cross that bridge when I come to it.
smuggle v.t smuggled, smuggling to move something secretly into or out of a place.
push ones luck You are pushing your luck if you insist on doing something which you
know could get you into trouble.
to cross to go across. The little boy is too young to cross the road by himself.
cross that bridge when one comes to it not to worry about something in advance. I
dont know what Ill do if the bank doesnt give me a loan, but Ill cross that bridge when I
come to it.
9 Flight attendant 1: Would you care for some more cofee, sir?
Passenger 1: Ah, yes, please.
Flight attendant 1: Would you care for some more cofee?
Lee: Sure.
Gloria: Not for me, thanks.

space n. 1. the area away from the earth where the stars and planets are. Humans beings
first traveled out into space during the second half of the 20 th century. adj. 2. of or related
to space. Space travel wasnt possible until the second half of the 20 th century.
come to an end to end. I was really sad when my vacation came to an end.
hero n. 1. in a movie, the most important of the men who do good things. 2. in real life, a
man who is admired for being brave or strong, or for doing good things.
1 Lee: Oh, yes, youre a good baby. Your first airplane flight, and youre being so brave.
1 Gloria: Neat movie, huh?
Lee: Yeah, really exciting, Gloria. Gloria, its Wilbur, hes gotten out of the box.
Gloria: Are you serious?
Lee: Would I joke about something like that?
neat adj. 1. in a clean and orderly way. adj. (Slang) cool; great.
joke v.i. joked, joking to say things that are not meant to be taken seriously.
1 Gloria: What are we going to do?
2 Lee: Well have to go look for him.
Gloria: Were going to get caught for sure.
Lee: Weve got to try. You go up the aisle, and Ill go down. If the flight attendant comes,
just act like youve dropped something on the floor.

1 Gloria: Not in there.
3 Lee: Wilbur, Wilbur baby, come to Mommy.
Gloria: Wilbur, Wil-bur, Wil-bur.
Flight attendant 1: Did you drop something, maam? I can get a flashlight.
Glory: Oh, no, dont bother, it it was just a dime.

company n. if you say what kind of company someone is, you are describing what that
person is like to be with. George is very interesting, and he also makes me laugh. Hes a
great company.
heroine n. female hero.
horrible adj. terrible.
monster n. a large creature that is ugly and frightening.
in that case used before giving a conclusion or suggestion as a result of something that
has been said.
dislike v.i. disliked, disliking not to like. I like dogs, but I dislike cats.

5 Passenger 2: Fire!

Flight attendant 1: Calm down, false alarm. Everythings OK.
scream n. the noise you make when you scream.
false adj. not true.
false alarm n. a false alarm is when people are warned about something bad or
dangerous, but that thing does not actually happen. Jane was told she might be seriously
ill, but then the doctors at the hospital discovered it was a false alarm.
1 Flight attendant 2: Calm down.
6 Lee: Shhh
Flight attendant 1: Just calm down. Everythings going to be OK.
Flight attendant 2: What happened?
Passenger 2: Seems like the guy freaked out during the movie, and then the whole plane
went crazy.
Flight attendant 2: Ill get him some aspirin and a glass of water.
Passenger 2: Maybe a double whiskey would be better. Ha! Ha! Ha!
double whiskey n. a measure of whiskey twice as big as that which people normally
order.
