Founded in 2003 by Vishen Lakhiani, Mindvalley is a learning experience
company that publishes ideas and teachings by the best authors in personal
growth, health and fitness, spirituality, productivity, mindfulness and more
serving three million students, subscribers and followers worldwide.
Mindvalley in the beginning was just a small e-commerce store that sold self-help
programs and courses. I started Mindvalley with $700 and a beat-up laptop in
Starbucks, is often how Vishen would begin the Mindvalley origin story. But in
2004, after he struggled to keep his US Visa, he moved back to Kuala Lumpur, at
the height of a national brain drain, and years before the birth of the startup
ecosystem in Asia.
And so he made it his mission to built one of the best workplaces in the world in
Malaysia, despite the odds. Today, Vishen leads a 200-strong team of over 40
nationalities under a multi award-winning company culture.

In the past decade, Mindvalley has garnered a global reputation for being a
leading edu-tech company specializing in modern learning experiences and
content, launching online academies and digital platforms that publishes
personal growth education in areas such as wellbeing, mindfulness, relationships,
fitness, entrepreneurship and more. The company has also been recognized by
the likes of Forbes, The Huffington Post, BBC and Inc. Magazine. Yet Vishen built
Mindvalley with zero angel investors, venture capitalist money or government
grants.

"Our mission is to empower people to live healthier and happier lives, and
unleash their fullest human potential (our tagline is Be Extraordinary), by
introducing them to tools and ideas that are currently missing from traditional
education systems," said Vishen, who is determined to help revolutionize the
global education system. "Our goal? To launch a school for one billion people
worldwide." Focusing on happiness, growth, abundance and cultivating our
mutual mission for positive impact is one of secret recipe said by Vishen.

5 WAYS TO BUILD THE WORLDS GREATEST WORKPLACE IN MINDVALLEY

1. HAPPINESS
2. A NOBLE MISSION
3. QUEST
4. PERSONAL GROWTH
5. TRIBAL DYNAMIC

1. Happiness
Give a workplace there are so
beautiful that they do not want to return to their home because their
enjoyed in the office so much being in the office so much.
Mindvalleys build a really spectacular space in their office to bring
happiness towards their employees.
The employees given a freedom to use the space in anyway their want
which is called flexitime, so their can choose their working hours as long
their can complete the work in work timeframe. let them control their own
workspace and they will come out with great ideas
Mindvalley give their interested in giving the employees glorious social life
which is brought to various place such as Maui Hawaii, Maldive

His

ultimate goal is to make the employees friends, because its a lot

easier to come into work each day if you know youll have a friend there
with you.
Unlike traditional company, mindvalley weekly meeting is called the
awsomeness report which is the employees are encourage to send in
their key of accomplishment of the week though email and send it
within the team. These kind of report doesnt bring stress because it is
more like ledder of achivement toward future. Here they talk about their
key accomplishments for the week but they share it in a way thats similar
to a stand up comedy act. They describe it as watching The Daily Show.
Mindvalley create a program that won the best democratic workplace
which is allowing anynomous to ask anybody/manager within company to
express concerns. These allowed workers to ask without the risk be found
out. Here questions are submitted anonymously to the management for
them to publicly answer.
WHY HAPPINESS VERY IMPORTANT

When you make people happy, you make them excited in every morning. When
your blur the lines between work and play, people comes up their ways to
make their work culture productive and people make interesting done. Richard
Branson once said work and play bring no different to me, its all just
living

2. Noble mission
Mindvalley is a publisher of Personal Growth products for generation after books,
people are used technology such as Ipad, membership site and youtube.
They currently have around 1 million subscribers reading their content, but their
goal is to touch 500 million lives.

Having this kind of impact on such a large audience is what keeps Mindvalleys
employees engaged. Its the reason to wake up in the morning and jump out of
bed to come to work.

3. QUEST
Mindvalley borrows ideas from the computer game industry. Game designers had
ways to keep the employees engage and hooked. It is encourage your employees
to discover and do more in their day to day tasks by creating a system of
growing, moving from one level to another like in games (gamification of work)

One of the concepts Mindvalley applies to the work are Badges for your desk,
give superheroes badges when they complete an important task or project
So for example, if you are recognized for your ability to get work done quickly,
they throw The Flash on your desk. Everyone in the office sees it and knows
youre a speedy worker

Mindvalley also levels up their employees through other methods. One

example is their Bell of Awesomeness. When you do something truly
remarkable your managers or employees can nominate you for the Bell of
Awesomeness. This gets rung maybe

The Flash=
Speedy worker

once or twice in an employees career so when it happens everyone pays

attention

Use scores to sum up their performances, every Friday every team and
department send their high score to overcome the last week score. Another
gamification element they apply are Community Voted Leader Boards. These
help employees know whos doing things well and who to get help from if you are
looking for ways to improve.

Mount the Puppy sit on a plastic puppy in front of

your peers as they shower you with praise about
Creating
why you were anominated
1UP Emporiumas awhere every
top performer in
employees
the company. can send them an icon or badge to
anyone to say thanks for the great thing their
have done.

At Mindvalley, they implement the Easter Egg idea by having a secret committee
plan a surprise event, gift, or party twice a month. The secret committee called
S.P.L.A.S.H -secret society for platonic love appreciation smile and
happiness. Nobody in Mindvalley known the member of S.P.L.A.S.H. this
member got secret budget to
organize spontaneous festival like
Mustachio day where the man in
Mindvalley had to wear fake
mustache for the entire day.
S.P.L.A.S.H bring spontaneous
element to work that the worker will
never know what something weird
going to happen. Weirdness and
workplace is a wonderful way to
bring happiness that being introduce
in Mindvelly.

4 . PERSONAL GROWTH
Mindvalley Philosophy
Leadership is recognizing
that we are all ONE. That
every person that you Lead
is as brilliant as you, as
talented as you and has
the same capacity for
growth and
accomplishment. They
simply need to reminded of
this fact Mindvalley make
personal growth a part of their
work by having 45/5 rule. What
this means is employees will
typically work 45 hours a
week, but for 5 of those hours they are
required to invest in themselves (people
can read a book, attend a training,
meditate, discuss etc). Mindvalley offers
an unlimited budget for Amazon
books. Employees are encouraged to
pick any book they feel can help them
further their career or life and to go ahead
and read it on the companys time.

Mindvalley even went as far as to make

an auditorium called the Hall of
Awesomeness where guest coaches and speakers are flown in to help grow and
educate the Mindvalley team
Here they keep a bulletin board with
three things about each of their
employees. First, what are the
experiences or objects you
want to attain in your lifetime?
Second, how they want to grow?
It could be public speaking, learning
to cook like a chef, or learn a new
language. Third, what do you
want to contribute to the
world?

These then become a goal of the

company to make a reality in their
employees lives.

5. TRIBAL DYNAMICS

Mindvalley has their own version of the Holstee Manifesto. They call it their Code
of Awesomeness. The employees helped come up with it and it embodies how
the company works. In addition to their code, Mindvalley also has their own
language. For example, often theyll refer to someones work as Awe-gasmic,
which means the work was so impressive it sent shivers up their spine
Mindvalley tribe doesnt stop there. They
extend their tribe dynamics to their customers
by having an open office where people are
welcome to visit. They host their own festival
called Awesomefest where their customers
come together to learn about personal growth
and bond with the Mindvalley team.

By doing this, they help blur the borders

between company and customers.

Looking back at these five principles

First, Happiness + A Noble Mission = Flow. Think on the times youve been
happy in your work and its attached to something grand. How did you feel? Did
work just seem to fly? Did everything just seem to flow?

Second, Tony Robbins said there are two great spiritual needs people have.
Contribution and growth. When you apply a noble mission and personal growth
to your workplace, youre doing just that.

And finally, Dave Logan has something called a Level 4 Tribe, which is a pinnacle
companies try to achieve. If you study it, youll see that Happiness + A Noble
Mission + Tribal Dynamics = A Level 4 Tribe.

Whats the Impact?

Research clearly shows multiple benefits from several of these principles on their
own, let alone when they are combined. Loyalty, innovation, hard work,
fulfillment, and revenue growth are just a few.

But Vishen is most proud of the impact it has on the individuals. He sees around
25% of his employees go on to become entrepreneurs after working at
Mindvalley for longer than two years. Thats powerful. 70% of our awake
hours are spend at work, why not make these hours happier?
