Discuss how Baxter uses poetic techniques to present and develop ideas in Wild Bees

The poem Wild Bees written by James K Baxter has a the strong and powerful idea of humans
becoming very destructive to gain little and how the lesson we learn from past tragedies does not last
long. Baxter presents and develops this e idea through the poem by using many poetic techniques,
including figurative languages.

This poem is about two men burning bee hives however reasonable excuses for burning innocent bees
and bee hives are not hinted anywhere. They are after the honey we drew our plunder the gold they
are after is the golden honey. Bees are described as really pure and innocent creatures that swift as
tigers, their gauze wings a glitter in passionless industry. What is the purpose of this quote? However
two men are only described as cruel people who just commit crimes for fun. gloved and masked to the
eyes like plundering desperadoeswhat are they stealing? The honey? Is it their job? this simile draws
an image of terrorists who hide their identity before they pillage a city do terrorists pillage cities? .
Their characteristic of ruthlessness is further developed when they start burning bee hives in stanza
four. And maimed bees groaningand slight our joy. This personification of bees groaning and two
men having joy also draws an image of a killer who laughs and smiles while murdering. Those
language techniques used clearly presented an idea of human being destructive to weak,(do you mean
that the humans are destructive and the bees are defenceless?? Even though they try to defend
themselves) without knowing why, for little gain, in this case for joy. This idea exactly reflects our
world, how people kill each other not exactly knowing why however the men here are after the honey
they do have a reason.. Soldiers kill people because they were being told to, terrorists kill people for
fun. This was the also the case in Wild Bees.

Allusions are also used to portray the main idea of Wild Bees this is the main technique. Baxter
referred to Troy and Carthage to describe burning bee hives. O it was Carthage under the Roman
torches, Or loud with flames and falling timber. By referring to those two historical events that
happened at different times, it suggests that moment of realization does not last long. Not many
readers would know this story so they would not have the benefit of the lesson. This idea is further
developed in the last stanza. Tragedy is written distinct and small this metaphor says that tragedies
are written small, suggesting that they are easily forgettable. This is a break away from the allusions
that you have been discussing make it a new paragraph. Baxter also described the loss as But loss
is a precious stone to me this is a juxtaposition used to show that in fact the loss is not as precious.
Stones are not unique, they can be obtained everywhere but by saying it is precious it also suggest
that the lesson can be forgot easily. At the end of the poem Baxter stated the fallen heart that does
not cease to fall. Those language techniques especially the last line, metaphor, clearly communicated
his theme that the human will be always destructive. We pay the price for our own destructiveness, in
Wild Bees it was a loss of the city of instinctive wisdom. Troy and Carthage were also very developed
city that got destroyed by humans over night. Human seem to learn that tragedies are sad and
depressing however we do repeat and make the same mistake.
