Abstract

Diffuser augmented wind turbines (DAWT) is a model of the development of conventional wind
turbines, diffuser added to the construction of a conventional wind turbine to improve the performance
of wind turbine rotors. The wind turbine rotor double counter rotation is also a model of the
development of conventional wind turbines, conventional wind turbine that has a rotor developed into a
wind turbine with two rotors rotating in opposite directions. We sudied the improved effect of a diffuser
had on the performance of wind turbines with rotor dual counter rotation, as related to the change of the
ratio of diffuser length (L) and inlet diameter (D) of the diffuser. The flow around DAWT is simulated
using computational fluid dynamic (CFD) with ANSYS FLUENT. In this simulation, the wind speed is
3 m / s and the ratio of L / D are 0.5; 1; 1.5; 2; and 2.5. The effect of the ratio L / D on the wind speed
inside the diffuser was Analyzed by steady state simulation and Showed that the wind speed inside the
diffuser was greatly influenced by the ratio of L / D, with an increase in wind speed inside the diffuser
reaches 35% - 68%. Due to increased wind speeds, the Performance of each wind turbine rotor also
increases known from TSR produced each rotor. TSR rotor wind turbine with dual counter rotation
without diffuser was 4.79 and 4.82 for the front rotor and rear rotor, respectively. TSR produced front
rotors with a ratio L / D 0.5; 1; 1.5; 2; and 2.5 acre 6:23; 8.81; 10:39; 11:28; and 11:50, respectively.
TSR produced rear rotor is 5.29; 6:11; 6.63; 7:42; and 8:28 for the ratio L / D 0.5; 1; 1.5; 2; and 2.5,
respectively. The result of the simulation show that the addition of the length of the diffuser resulted in
the diffuser further speed up and the performance of each rotor in the diffuser also will rise as well.
Introduction
Wind energy is one form of renewable energy that is clean and free to use. Tool to convert wind energy
into electrical energy or other mechanical energy is called a wind turbine. Model wind turbine is the
most widely used model of horizontal axis wind turbines (horizontal axis wind turbine or HAWT) and
vertical axis (vertical axis wind turbine or VAWT). In this study will be discussed related to the
development of horizontal axis wind turbines are Diffuser Augmented Wind Turbines (DAWT), in
which the wind turbine model is coupled with a diffuser to increase the rate of air flow through the
rotor. In addition, this DAWT models will be developed from a single wind turbine rotor into a double
rotor wind turbine that drives two separate shaft, wherein the direction of rotation of each rotor
opposing or counter-rotation.
Methodology
Research carried out on the model of wind turbine rotor DAWT with dual counter rotation using
computational fluid dynamic method with ANSYS Fluent. The research model is shown in Figure 17,
in this study the object under study and the rotor only diffuser.Spesifikasi DAWT models with double
rotors counter-rotation is the front rotor diameter (D front) = 230 mm, the rear rotor diameter (D rear) =
400 mm, the distance axially between the rotor (x) = 145 mm, diameter of the inlet diffuser (D) = 400
mm, diffuser expansion angle (a) = 10 , Comparison of Long diffuser and diffuser inlet diameter (L /
D) = 0.5; 1; 1.5; 2; and 2.5. Computing domain that is used a cylinder with a diameter of 1200 mm and
a length of 2500 mm.
Simulations performed at a wind speed of 3 m / s. In this research there are two variables, namely the
independent variable and the dependent variable. The independent variable is the ratio of diffuser
length (L) to the diameter of the inlet diffuser (Dinlet), with a variation ratio of 0.5; 1; 1.5; 2; and 2.5.
The dependent variable is the rotor rotation generated front rotor and rear rotor. In addition, the speed
increase occurs in the diffuser also simulated to see how long the diffuser to increase speed inside the
diffuser. Wind wind turbine's performance can be seen from the resulting rotation of each rotor, of the
data round, we can calculate the TSR using the following equation.
In equation (1), is the angular velocity of the rotor, r is the radius of the rotor, and V is the velocity of
the wind inlet.
Result & Conclusion
Table 1 shows the simulation results for DAWT steady without rotor, when the ratio of the enlarged
diffuser length, the maximum speed in the diffuser will also increase. It could be said that the length of
the diffuser is directly proportional to the increase in wind speed inside the diffuser. Table 2 shows the
performance of the front rotor and rear rotor is in the diffuser. TSR produced by each rotor increases
with increasing length ratio diffuser. Bertambanya TSR caused by wind speed in the diffuser increases.
TSR produced by each rotor inside the diffuser is also proportional to length ratio diffuser. In other
words, the performance of DAWT with double rotor counter-rotation increases as the length ratio of the
enlarged diffuser.
