Class Newspaper (The Cold War Special)

As a class, we will construct a newspaper with articles, pictures, and political


cartoons about the major showdowns that take place during the Cold War.
Each group of four will write a 200 word article about a specific Cold War
encounter and make a picture detailing the events of the article (except for
the Editorial Group). There are only going to be 7 groups, so make sure
youre finding a group to be in, working alone is not an option! Each group
will receive an info packet as well as key terms to look for that will help them
write the article, each group must share the work! You will need to know the
topics on the newspaper for the test, even if you didnt write an article about
it!

Civil War in China (pg. 450/538)
China Turns Communist (pg. 540)
War in Korea (pg. 542)
Vietnams Civil War (pg. 544)
The U.S. in Vietnam (pg. 546)
War in Cambodia (pg. 547)
Editorial Team (Writes one opinion piece and a political cartoon, plans layout)

Requirements:

1. Style- Your paper must be written like a newspaper article, with a title that
describes the conflict, talks about the event in first-person, and fits within
the size requirement given to you by the Editorial Team

2. Picture- The picture must show a part of the event and be handmade by a
member of the group. The picture should be colored and highly detailed, as
well as being helpful in explaining the context of the article

3. Length- The article must be 200 words long, not counting title, authors
names, and the date.

4. Editorial Team Only- You will be writing an editorial, which is an opinion article
about how a newspaper staff feels about an issue. The issue will be American
involvement in the Cold War. As an editorial team, you must decide your opinion
and in a 200 word article outline your reasoning. Your team will also make a political
cartoon about a Cold War topic. Most importantly, your team will be in charge of

Rubric (50 points)

Article (40 points)


- 10 points for meeting size and style requirements
- 5 points for article length
- 5 points for spelling and grammar
- 20 points for correct content

Picture (10 points)


- 5 points for describing the event and providing context to article
- 5 points for highly detailed and colored

Editorial Team:

Opinion Article (30 points)


- 10 points for background information on Cold War
- 10 points for grammar, spelling, size, and style requirements
- 10 points for 3 reasons backing up the teams opinion

Layout (10 points)


- 10 points for providing size requirements and setting up
layout by Tuesday!

Political Cartoon (10 points)


- 5 points for a topic and appropriately parodying it
- 5 points for highly detailed and colored
