Overview of the Lesson
Lesson Summary:
In this lesson, the students will be learning about different kinds of lines and
creating tin foil relief sculptures.
Massachusetts Framework Standards:
2.2 - For line, explore the use of line in 2D and 3D works
Identify a wide variety of types of lines in the environment and in artwork
2.13 Use color, line, texture, shape, and form in 2D and 3D work and identify
the use of these elements in the compositions of others
Lesson Objectives:
The students will be able to create a tin foil relief sculpture using different
types of lines (horizontal, vertical, zigzag, diagonal, curly, curved, spiral, free form, etc.).
Materials/Equipment to be Used in Teaching the Lesson:
- Matte board
- Tin foil
- Yarn
- Scissors
- Glue
- Colored sharpies

Big Ideas:
- There are many types of lines: thick, thin, horizontal, vertical, zigzag, diagonal, curly,
curved, spiral, free form, etc.
- A line is a moving point.

The students will create tin foil relief sculptures demonstrating their
understanding of the different types of lines.

Action/Instructional Procedures
Procedures: For each procedure, list the teacher or student actions (with accommodations and
modifications) as well as the anticipated amount of time it will take to accomplish each task.

Day 1
o Anticipatory Set: (hook) 5 minutes
The teacher will show the students a video to introduce line.

o Foil Relief: - 35 mintues
The teacher does a demonstration on how to draw free form lines and how
to add the yarn to their board.
Trace the lines with the Elmers glue and place the yarn on.
The student draw lines on their board and check with the teacherto make
sure there are no spaces that are too small or too big.
The students add the yarn to their boards.
Day 2 40 minutes
o Students finish up adding the yarn let dry.
o Students paint glue over their boards and lay a piece of tin foil on top of each.
o Students choose 3 colors for the sculpture and begin to color making sure that
there are no two spaces next to each other with the same color.
Day 3 - 30 minutes
o Students finish up coloring their relief sculptures.
o Closure: - 20 minutes
