Parabolic Unit Test

Name______________________ Date______________
Period_____________________
PART I: NON-CALCULATOR
1. Transform the following quadratics. If the quadratic is in normal form, then transform to
vertex form, and vice-versa:
a. = 2 2 + 12 8 b. = 3( 4)2 5

2. Calculate the y and x intercepts of each quadratic for the previous question (if the
intercept does not exist, then state D.N.E).
3. Suppose a pitcher is at his mount, and thinks about taunting the upcoming batter. To do
so, the pitcher thinks that he may try to trick the batter. So, after 1 second the batter
approaches home plate, the pitcher throws the baseball directly above him at a maximum
height of 10 feet. The baseball take approximately 3 seconds to reach its maximum height
and get back to the pitcher. As soon as the pitcher catches the ball, the pitcher throws the
ball at a constant velocity of 3 ft/s. It takes the ball 2 seconds to reach the batter at home
plate, then the batter strikes out.
a. Represent the baseballs motion from the time that the batter approaches home
plate in relation to the distance of the ball from the pitcher and time. Label all
axes with appropriate units

b. If the batter is 12 feet from the pitcher mount, how long will it take for the
baseball to reach home plate after being thrown?

c. Using the graph that you created, at what time does the ball reach its maximum
height after being thrown in the air by the pitcher? What is a mathematical term
that can be used define this same point in time?
PART II: CALCULATOR ALLOWED
4. Using your calculator, try to match quadratic in the graph, and give a reasonable equation
that represents the quadratic. Provide evidence for your equations and explain any
assumptions that you may have made.
5. Mr. Monopoly and Mr. Clean have been in business for a long time, and have had fun
being competitive when it comes to making money. So, every decade, the two present
their earning trends and see how each other have fared in business. For this last decade,
the following earnings have been made by each:
Mr. Monopolys Earnings:
Year 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013 2014 2015
Earning 38 32 30 32 38 48 62 80 102
(million)

2016 2017
128 158

Mr. Cleans Earnings:

Year 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013 2014 2015
Earning 30 32 34 36 38 40 42 44 46
(million)

2016 2017
48 50

a. Create a graphical representation of each businessmans earnings on the same graph with
appropriate labels and units (Hint: I would not start from 0 on any of the axes).
b. At what point does Mr. Monopoly and Mr. Clean have the same amount of earnings
throughout the decade?

c. Would there be another point in time that Mr. Monopoly and Mr. Clean having the same
earnings? If so, when do you think it would be and at what amount of earnings? Explain
your mathematical reasoning.

d. Using the knowledge from the tables and your calculator, determine the equation of each
businessmans trend. With the equations that you provided, calculate the y-intercepts, x-
intercepts, vertexes (quadratics), and slopes (linear)
