BJS Jazz Education Conference Schedule

Wednesday 18th of January 2017 at the Verdict, Brighton

Brighton Jazz School is delighted to be running their annual Jazz Education

Conference at the South Coast Jazz Festival this year. We firmly believe that
learning jazz should not be a classroom experience but rather a fully integrated
community-based experience. This is nothing new and stems back to how the jazz
greats learnt. Getting together, practising together, listening together and gigging
together. This has been our ethos since the very beginning. Today is about
championing the amazing array of jazz education institutions we have in the South
East; coming together and sharing best practices and experiences. It is very
important to us that we are associated with festivals and venues that promote live
jazz which is why we are very excited and honored to be running the conference as
part of the South Coast Jazz Festival Programme. The first part of proceedings will
be talks and workshops given by professional jazz musicians and educators covering
a wide variety of subject areas. The subject matter is linked together through the
notion of community.

This evening we will be holding an awards ceremony for students across three jazz
education establishments including a multi-band concert of students from Brighton
Jazz School, Chichester College, and University of Chichester. This day is dedicated
to the late Simon Dsouza, whose widow Susan will be attending and contributing to
the awards to be given out this evening, as a legacy of Simon's positive contribution
to the jazz and education scene in the South Coast region.

Brighton Jazz School would like to thank the South Coast Jazz Festival for hosting
us this year as well as Brightons only dedicated Jazz Club; the Verdict.

The South Coast Jazz Festival are proud to present an evening of music and awards for
students across four Jazz Education Institutions in the South. You will hear music from the
students of Chichester College, Brighton Jazz School, the University of Chichester and from
the participants at the workshop this afternoon. The awards are to celebrate achievements
throughout the year from our students and to honor and remember the late Simon D Souza
who was a pillar of light in the community. Simon was extremely dedicated to passing on the
art-form in his very gentle but assertive manner. To say he was encouraging and supportive
to students is an understatement. The students loved him because he saw himself as one.
We give out the awards in his name and remember him as a wonderful musician, educator
and humanitarian.
