WEATHER FORECAST FOR THE NEXT SEVEN-DAY PERIOD VALID 25TH


APR TO 1ST MAY, 2017

Review of weather for the last seven-day Forecast for the next seven days (25th Apr
period 17th to 23rd April, 2017): to 1st May, 2017):
Most parts of the country continued to receive rainfall The forecast indicates that:
during the past week with heavy rainfall recorded over Between Tuesday and Friday, several parts of the

parts of the country.

1. Weather Review for the last seven days (17th to 23rd April, 2017)
1.1 Rainfall Review

Most parts of the country continued to receive rainfall during the past week with heavy rainfall recorded over
parts of Southeast, Western and parts of Central highlands. (See Figure 1).

Kitui Meteorological Station recorded the highest seven-day total of 243.7mm. This same station recorded the
highest rainfall within one day (118mm on 18th April). Compared to the previous review period there was a

marked increase in rainfall amounts over most parts of the country. Figure 2 shows the spatial distribution of
rainfall during the review period. Figure 3 shows stations that recorded heavy (>20mm/24hrs) and very heavy
(>50mm/24hrs) rainfall during the review period.

1.2 Temperature

During the review period, day-time (maximum) temperatures decreased throughout the country. Night-time
(minimum) temperatures increased over parts of Central Highlands, Rift Valley as well as Lodwar and decreased
over Coast and a few other stations across the country.

Lodwar Meteorological Station recorded the highest daily maximum temperature of 38.2C on 21st April while
Nyahururu Meteorological Station recorded the lowest daily minimum temperature of 7.5C on 23rd April. The
same stations recorded the highest seven-day average maximum temperature of 37.5oC the lowest seven-day
average minimum temperature of 9.7C respectively. (See Figure 4 below)

2. FORECAST FOR THE NEXT SEVEN DAYS FROM 25TH APR TO 1ST MAY, 2017

The forecast indicates that:


Between Tuesday and Friday, several parts of the country are likely to remain generally dry,
while from Saturday to Monday, rainfall is expected over several parts of the country.
Heavy rainfall is expected from Saturday through Monday mainly in Central Highlands, Central
Rift and Western.

2.1 DETAILED REGIONAL FORECAST FOR THE NEXT SEVEN DAYS 25TH APR TO 1ST MAY, 2017

The Lake Victoria Basin, Highlands West of the Rift Valley, Central and South Rift Valley (counties of Siaya,
Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Transnzoia, Baringo, Uasingishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, Laikipia,
Nakuru, Narok, Kajiado, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma and Busia) on Tuesday, morning rains and
afternoon showers and thunderstorms are expected over few places. Between Wednesday and Friday, the
mornings are expected to be sunny while few places may experience afternoon showers and thunderstorms;
From Saturday to Monday, rainfall is expected over several places both in the morning and afternoon. The rainfall
is expected to be heavy;

Northwestern (counties of Turkana, West Pokot and Samburu) are expected to experience sunny conditions
between Tuesday and Friday. From Saturday to Monday the region is expected to have morning rains over few
places and afternoon showers and thunderstorms over few places;

Central Highlands including, Nairobi area (counties of Nairobi, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu,
Meru, Embu, and Tharaka) on Tuesday, morning rains and afternoon showers are expected over few places. On
Wednesday and Thursday, mornings and afternoons are expected to be sunny. From Friday to Monday rainfall is
expected over several places both in the morning and afternoon. The rainfall is expected to be heavy;

Northeastern (counties of Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa and Isiolo) on Tuesday, morning rains are
expected over few places and sunny intervals in the afternoon. From Wednesday to Friday, mornings and
afternoons are expected to be sunny. From Saturday to Monday, morning rains and afternoon showers are
expected over few places in the North;

Southeastern (counties of Kitui, Makueni, Machakos and Taita Taveta) from Tuesday to Thursday, mornings and
afternoons are expected to be sunny. Friday to Monday sunny intervals are expected in the morning and showers
in the afternoon over few places;

The Coastal Strip (counties of Mombasa, Tana River, Kilifi, Lamu and Kwale) are expected to experience
morning and afternoon showers over few places from Tuesday to Friday increasing to several places in the
mornings from Saturday to Monday.

N.B: This forecast should be used in conjunction with the daily (24-hour) forecast issued by this
Department.
