Objective The student will demonstrate knowledge of westward expansion and reform in
America from 1801 to 1861 by
a) describing territorial expansion and how it affected the political map of the
United States, with emphasis on the Louisiana Purchase, the Lewis and Clark
expedition, and the acquisitions of Florida, Texas, Oregon, and California;

b) identifying the geographic and economic factors that influenced the westward
movement of settlers;
c) describing the impact of inventions, including the cotton gin, the reaper, the
steamboat, and the steam locomotive, on life in America;
d) identifying the main ideas of the abolitionist and womens suffrage
movements.

Activity
For this activity, students will create an online timeline for each of the events with
matching maps to go with them. In the class, all students will be partnered with a
classmate to create one timeline (http://www.hstry.co/ ) and one map
(http://www.scribblemaps.com/). When the activity is completed, laptops or iPads will
be utilized to allow for a roundabout where the teacher will give time for students
to rotate to each station. Their classmates will look at the work theyve made and take
notes the teacher provides (fill in the blank notes). As for the teacher, they will assign
certain key words and dates for each group that will be in the same fill in the blank
notes. They will also aid the students with the technology that they use for this
activity. The information that they will use in this activity will be from their notes from
class. They will also have time to do a little research using The Library of Congresss
official website (http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/index.html ). This project will be
done over the course of 1-2 week (time adjustments can be made as needed).

gy websites are free to use and the teacher will create one account for each activity for
the class to use so that their work is saved. For research, they will utilize
http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/index.html (The Library of Congress) if they want to
add or find any additional information.
 Directions The Library of Congress:
for Use 1) Enter http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/index.html into the web bar.

2) Click on the search box in the top right hand corner of the window and enter
in any key words for your topic (For example, Louis and Clark) or click on the
various topics provided on the left side of the window under Browse
collections by topic.
3) Utilize the search bar as much as possible!
Scribble Maps:
1) To start, enter http://www.scribblemaps.com/ into the web bar and press
Login using the link at the top of the page. Use the username and password
the teacher provided for you.
2) Click on Create Map at the top of the page, and exit out of the window that
says Scribble Maps VIP. Begin finding your assigned location for your event
(For example, if your project is on the acquisition of Florida, find it in your map
or use the search bar near your tools menu). You can do this by clicking and
dragging the map to your location.
3) Using the tools at the top of the map creator, draw lines or boxes indicating
important places where your assigned events took place. Make sure to add
text boxes to briefly describe what happened in those places (The text tool
says ABC).
4) Once completed, click the menu bar at the top left of the map maker and click
Save Map. Your title should be what you were assigned and the description
box should have you and your partners name on it.
Timeline Maker:
1) Go to http://www.hstry.co/ and click login using the information your teacher
provides. Click Join a Class and enter the code your class has.
2) Scroll down until you see a box that says Create A Story.
3) Scroll down until you see Choose a Title and enter the event that you were
assigned. Click on Write a description and enter you and your partners
name and the date.
4) Click on the plus sign a little further down the page to add text and images.
Add the information you were assigned to present using the text and image
tools provided.
5) When youre finished, at the top of the page click our class and click submit.
Your timeline is now complete!
