Bob Dylan Awarded The Nobel Prize In Literature

Bob Dylan is a songwriter who gained fame in the 1960s and he was awarded the 2016 Nobel
Prize in Literature.1 the first musician who received such an award.2

Dylan now joins writers3 such as Toni Morrison, Gabriel Garca Mrquez, Pablo Neruda, John
Steinbeck and Ernest Hemingway as Nobel laureates in literature. As stated by Swedish
Academy representatives, Dylan created new poetic expressions within the great American song
tradition.

Known for his reclusiveness, Dylan was quiet for some time after the announcement came.4
stating that it took him time to properly process it. At the Nobel Prize Ceremony, Dylans
speech was delivered by the American ambassador to Sweden 5 and his A Hard Rains A-Gonna
Fall was performed by Patti Smith, due to schedule conflicts.

When Dylan finally accepted his award earlier this month, he requested no media be present at
the private ceremony. Dylan was extremely grateful to have been awarded such an honor, stating
that it is something I never could have imagined, that he is in very rare company, and ended
with a statement of gratitude.

Not once have I ever had the time to ask myself, Are my songs literature? So, I do thank the
Swedish Academy, both for taking the time to consider that very question, and, ultimately, for
providing such a wonderful answer. My best wishes to you all, Dylan said.

However, some have questioned whether a musician should receive this award. Although much
of early literature was meant to be sung, when Dylans songs are stripped of music, excellent
poetry still remains.

Dylan wrote about a wide array of topics6, having released over 30 albums over a 50-year career.
Much of his most popular work came from the 60s, with his later songs being equally as deep,
writing about social issues.

During this period, songs such as Blowin in the Wind, and The Times They Are a-Changin
came out with lines like, How many roads must a white dove sail, before she sleeps in the sand?
/ How many times must the cannon balls fly, before theyre forever banned? / The answer my
friend, is blowin in the wind, the answer is blowin in the wind, and Dont criticize what you
cant understand, and the line it is drawn, the curse it is cast / The slow one now will later be
fast / As the present now, will later be past for the times they are a-changin.

Through Dylans songs, there is a profound sense of wisdom and this is apparent in Its Alright,
Ma (Im Only Bleeding) and Dont Think Twice, Its All Right, with aphorisms such as:
from the fools gold mouthpiece the hollow horn / plays wasted words, proves to warn / That he
not busy being born is busy dying and Im walkin down that long, lonesome road, babe /
Where Im bound, I cant tell / But goodbyes too good a word, gal / So Ill just say fare thee
well But dont think twice, its all right.

Dylan has displayed his profound wit and creativity for years and in reading his lyrics with any
detail. It becomes apparent that the Swedish Academy was justified in their decision 7. Musicians
and writers alike will forever have Bob Dylan to thank for.

Thailand and Vietnam

The U.S. is Thailands third-largest trading partner after China and Japan.

Trade between the U.S. and Thailand was $36.5 billion in 2016. More than $24 billion was from
Thai exports. Among the top exports to the U.S. were machinery, electrical appliances,
electronics and parts, rubber products and gems and jewelry.

U.S. than it buys. (Transitive verb)

Trans Pacific Partnership

President Trump has already changed U.S. trade policy. Soon after he took office in January,
Trump withdrew from the Trans Pacific Partnership or, TPP agreement. (Complex

The agreement was an important part of former U.S. president Barack Obamas pivot to Asia
policy. It was designed to limit Chinas growing political and economic influence in the area.
(Passive verb)

Carl Thayer, a political scientist at the University of New South Wales, explains one of the
effects of Trump withdrawing from the TPP. He says North Vietnam now wants to increase trade
with China under the Chinese Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP).

Vietnam had its heart and soul on the TPP," Thayer said. "They have a massive surplus with the
U.S. It almost equals their massive deficit with China. But theres not very much they can do.
Theyre being pragmatic and looking at the RCEP."

Thayer said Vietnam hoped for a strong American presence in Asia to balance Chinas influence,
especially in the South China Sea. Now, he said, Vietnam will have to balance its relationships
more equally among the U.S. and India, Russia, Japan and China. (Indirect speech)

And, Thayer added, without strong U.S. action in the region, Vietnam will have to work harder to
balance Chinese influence. (Intransitive verb)

He says relations between the U.S. and Vietnam, which have been built up over the past 20 years,
may be hurt because of a possible change in trade policy. (Indirect speech)
