Self-Introduction
Philosophy of Education
Asking somebodys opinion on their own philosophy of a broad subject is a difficult task,
and for me its no different. So to start, it is important to get to know me in a rather broad sense.
As a person, I am a very calm and patient individual who doesnt let much get to them and I feel
like thats a necessary trait for a teacher to have for all grades. I grew up surrounded by amazing
teachers and very few I would actually complain about. It is an important reason I am becoming
an educator myself. Growing up, I was a relatively shy person until I became comfortable with
the people I was surrounded with and I feel like this is valuable because I can easily empathize
with my students who also feel this way. I became friends with all sorts of different people in
terms of personality, race, culture, and economic background and it greatly helped me build a
foundation on the fact that no matter how different we may appear, or act, or sound, we can all
I want to become a teacher for an abundant amount of reasons, but the reason that stuck
with me throughout high school was that I wanted to give students the same, if not better,
learning experience that I went through my whole life; where my teachers actually cared about
me. Although I cant directly control their previous or future years of schooling, I can do my best
to ensure students get the most out everything that I teach them. The purpose of education isnt
necessarily to ensure society grows intellectually, albeit that is an important function of it. My
own personal beliefs state that the purpose of education is to aid students in building their own
perspective of how they want to live out the rest of their lives, and giving them the tools and
knowledge to make those dreams into an actual reality. As an educator, it is quite literally my job
to facilitate my students by giving them the tools and knowledge in ways that they actually feel

are valuable to their lives, rather than handing them mundane tasks that they must complete to
graduate. For example, since I am becoming a math teacher, I want my students to understand
why math works because they know where the concepts are coming from and how to utilize
these concepts to complete real-world problems rather than just giving them formulas to
I want to teach high schoolers because I feel like I can have a much larger impact on their
lives. High school comes right before students take that next step into the real world but they
are almost never prepared for it. Although my subject area is limited to the math I am teaching
that year, I want to be able to apply real world applications to all of my content so students feel
like they are actually getting something out of their work. They will also feel more comfortable
in the fact that they can actually use the math theyve learned in years to come. Instead of
overloading my students with homework to ensure Im checking for understanding (did they
do it or not?), I want to give my students a smaller number of need-provoking tasks that force
students to challenge themselves because they actually want to find the solution. I feel like this is
not only more applicable to high school students, but actually necessary for them in the future.
One of the biggest challenges for all educators is the fact that all students learn
differently. An important part of my philosophy is that I must be able to empathize and build
rapport with my students as quickly yet effectively, as possible. The sooner I get a grasp for how
my class behaves, collaborates, reacts, and most importantly, learns, the sooner I can start
developing more personal lesson plans and teaching strategies that are adjusted to the students I
am educating. I also want to be constantly engaging with my students, ensuring them that I not
only care about their success, but I am always there for them when they are not understanding a
concept.

management. As Ive stated before, I am a very calm and patient person and past experiences
from students I tutor show that can be abused. It is hard to find that fine line in between friend
and boss when you teach a class full of 30-40 students. I feel like establishing the fact that you
are technically the boss (for lack of a better word) while also laying down rules and procedures
is an important first step for classroom management. It is easy to go from strict to lay back, but
almost impossible to do the opposite. Once students are aware of the rules, procedures, and
general guidelines of the classroom, and they are aware I will enforce them, then I can start
developing rapport and becoming more of a friend. My goal is to have students recognize that as
long as they follow the classroom precedents, they will generally have a more complacent
learning environment.
To draw things to an end, the role of an educator has got to be one of the most
challenging, yet rewarding, duties that one can find the pleasure of being in. It is vital to never
give up hope on your students, or yourself. Educators should become facilitators; learning may
not come easily to students, but it is your job to ensure it comes as easily as possible. It requires a
great deal of dedication, patience, development, and empathy but the second one student comes
up to me and says something as simple as, thank you for being a good teacher, it all becomes
worth it.

Classroom Layout
My classroom layout is rather simple but structured this way for a reason. It is important
to note that I have still not taught in a classroom of my own so my layout with most likely be
changing, either in a minor way or immensely, depending on experience. For now, the reason I
set up my classroom in this way is because I want my class periods focused around discussion
and group/partner collaboration rather than lectures. I want tables to be grouped together facing
each other so students can collaborate amongst their peers much more effectively. I also want
there to be plenty of space so that students feel comfortable in the class, especially if I have them
Classroom Procedures
Classroom procedures are the backbone to the day to day life of a teacher. They will be
the guidelines to how the classroom functions daily and will allow students to have a clear

My own personal philosophy states that students must always show respect for the

Students will not eat in class (distraction to themselves and others)
Students will not be on their phones, laptops, iPads, or any other electronic device
without permission.
Students will not talk to classmates unless instructed.
Students will not leave their seats or exit the room unless allowed.
Students will not harm themselves or one another.
Students will not cheat, plagiarize, or steal work on any homework assignment, quiz, test,
etc.
Consequences:

3. Be On-time If the student is late more than one time, they will
be given a reduced grade for participation on that
day. Coming in late continuously will result in an
email to the parent or guardian.
4. No Electronics Unless Allowed Students will be given one warning. The second
time they break the rule, the teacher will take their
phone until the end of the class period.
5. Raise Your Hand to Speak Students who speak without being called on
(unless were in a class-wide discussion) will be
given one warning. If they continue to interrupt
class, I will have them speak to me after class to
calmly let them know they are disrupting the
lesson.
