Lesson Plan:

Introduction
(Anticipatory Set/Focus/Motivation):
To gain students attention I will have a mystery box with an egg, a stuffed chick, and a
picture representing a cycle. I will relate it back to reading by saying, Remember how we
have been talking about main idea during reading?...Well I have a box with details and I want
you to see if you can figure out the mystery main idea of our topic!

Information Giving
1. After the class has come to the conclusion that we will be discussing the life cycle of a
chicken, I will read the book From Egg to Chicken by Dr. Gerald Legg. I will stop on
page 14 to ask students if they can think of any other animals that have to sit on their
eggs to keep them safe and warm. Before turning to page 18 I will ask the students if
they can guess how many days the baby chick is inside of the egg.
2. Next, I will share the poster that shows the life cycle of a chicken.
3. After briefly sharing the poster, we will look at the life cycle link on the smartboard
and listen to what the author has to say about each stage.
4. On the slideshow I will show the students day 13 of a chick egg, because that is what
day our chicks are currently on!

Guided Practice:
1. I will show students one example of a puzzle strip and how to place them together and
give the expectations of working with their tablemates. (Each student must place a
strip in the list while placing them in order, students should not argue over puzzle
pieces, students will work together as a team to solve what pieces go together, etc.)
2. Students will go to their table groups and work together to place the puzzle pieces
together correctly. Once each strip is correctly placed together, they will need to
place the strips in order from beginning to end of the life cycle.

Independent Practice:
Students will complete the egg shaped sequencing booklet. They will need to write the
steps of the life cycle in the correct order. On the last page students must draw arrows in
the correct direction to show the flow of the life cycle. The poster will be on the smart
board as a reference for students.

Assessment/Evaluation:
I will walk around as students are matching puzzle pieces together and putting them in
order to see if they are able to correctly demonstrate the life cycle of a chicken.
I will collect each students sequencing booklet to evaluate if the student was able to
recall the correct order of the life cycle.

Closure / Culminating
Activity:
I will call students back to the learning rug to share something new they learned about the
life cycle of a chicken.

Enrichment/Extension:
Once students have completed the sequencing book, they may use an Ipad to scan the QR
code to watch the video Our Chickens Hatching. After the video they may discuss
something new they learned or their favorite part of the video with a partner.
