FERRY
The Isle of Bute can only be reached by ferry. There are two
car ferries to the island. A small one at Colintravie at the
north of the island and one on the east coast of the island
into the island's main town of Rothesay. This is the main one
and can be caught from Wemyss Bay. You can not book in
advance.

Make your way to the ferry terminal in Wemyss Bay,

Inverclyde, Scotland, on the coast, to the west of Glasgow.
The ferry terminal is next to the train station in Wemyss Bay,
on the main road and easy to find.
Join the queue in the tarmac parking area, the cars queue
from line 3 onwards. Disabled, or anyone that will find the
steep stairs up to the lounge area on the ferry difficult
should park in line 1 or 2 and the staff will position the car
close to the lift on the ferry. The ferry is very easy to use and
the staff are very helpful. If you turn up with only a few
minutes to spare, the ferry may wait if they are not too busy
while you go and get a ticket....so run quickly to the
portacabin!

Tickets must be bought before boarding the ferry. There are

two ticket offices. A portacabin near the car park or a ticket
office inside the train station, at the end of the undercover
pier. If you have time, use this one because the
station is a grade 'A' listed building and well worth taking a
look at if you have the time. There are toilets in the station
and also a little cafe, and a bar. Refreshments can also be
found across the road at the Seaview Cafe which is very
nice but may take longer to be served. There is also a fish
and chip shop and a newsagents opposite the ferry.
Onboard the ferry there are toilets, and a small shop with
snacks and papers. You can't remain in your car on the
ferry.

The ferry timetable and prices can be found at.

www.calmac.co.uk tel; 08000 665 000 or 01475 650 100.
Times do vary slightly but as a general rule they run once an
hour from 7.15am to 8pm. The ferry takes 35 minutes to
cross.
6.10 return ticket per passenger, 21.90 return per car.
If you need to contact the ferry when you are on the island
the Rothesay ferry terminal number is 01700 502707.

FERRY DISRUPTION
The ferry is frequently disrupted. Not just bad weather but
also engine problems. There are usually two ferries, so
there would still be one running. Even in bad weather they
try to run at certain times during the day. You may wish to
download the mobile text service for the duration of your
stay. They will text you if the ferry is disrupted.
Text CALMAC SUBSCRIBE 03 to 60030. Text CALMAC
STOP 03 to end it.

In bad weather the ferry sometimes docks at Gourock

instead of Wemyss Bay because it is an easier pier to dock
alongside but it is an hours sailing rather than 35minutes.
To reach Gourock from Wemyss Bay, travel back up the A78
towards Greenock but turn left at the first roundabout,
simply follow the coast road through Gourock. Go past the
train station and after another half mile there is a small
turning on the left into Tarbet Street by the Blue Bird cafe.
Follow this small road and it will bring you behind the
Gourock Train Station. Someone will tell you where to wait
for the ferry, you will need to buy a ticket before boarding.
Usually from a portacabin. (The satnav may direct you on
another route to Gourock but it isn't much quicker and this is
certainly easier and prettier).

On the rare occasion that the ferry is cancelled or you arrive

too late to catch it, you will need to find overnight
accommodation. There are no hotels in Wemyss Bay or
Gourock although there are a few small B & B's, There is a
Premier Inn in Greenock,1/3 James Watt Way, Greenock,
PA15 2AP. Tel 0871 527 8476.
The nicest hotel in Greenock is The Tontine Hotel, a
beautiful independent old hotel. 6 Ardgowan Square,
Greenock, PA16 8NG Tel;01475 723 316. They offer good
last minute deals.
Alternatively if you are planning a stay before your holiday,
Largs is a prettier seaside town just a little further down the
coast from Wemyss Bay, they have many small independent
hotels.

Glasgow is also well worth a visit, the architecture is

beautiful and the shopping is very good. Glasgow is a
friendly and safe city. There is a direct train service from
Central Station Glasgow to Wemyss Bay.

If you decide to visit Glasgow from the Isle of Bute while on

holiday, you can buy a cheaper ticket if you buy your
passenger ferry and train ticket combined from the ferry
terminal in Rothesay. 'Rail and Sail' approx 15 return
(Adult) Rothesay to Glasgow.
DIRECTIONS FROM GLASGOW AIRPORT
There is a regular shuttle bus to Paisley train station from
the airport. Catch the train from Paisley Gilmour Street
Station to Wemyss Bay. The ferry leaves from by the train
station. The times are linked to coincide.
A taxi from the airport to the ferry is approx 50.
There are all the usual car hire companies at the airport.

An alternative transport option is a personal pick up by

www.scottishterriertour.com He has various sized transport
for 2x 8x or 16x. He will pick you up at the airport, show you
the sights on the way and bring you over on the ferry and to
the door of St Blane's House. Not expensive if there are a
group of you. He also offers specialised tours of Scotland,
see website.

Isle of Bute Taxi. 01700 504499. There are always Taxis in

the rank, on the main road just outside the ferry terminal.

Buses also run regularly to Kilchattan Bay. They are timed to

meet every ferry and the bus stop is on the main road just
outside the ferry terminal. Stay on the same side of the road
as the ferry terminal. There is a bus stop opposite St Blane's
House, the drivers are very helpful and will tell you when
you are there.
DIRECTIONS TO ST BLANE'S HOUSE FROM THE
FERRY

By car, leave the ferry and turn left at the traffic lights.
Follow the coast road for approx six miles.
At a tiny hamlet of Tudor houses called Kerrycroy the road
leaves the coast and swings inland. Continue on the same
road, it goes past the entrance to Mount Stuart House.
Follow the road through a wooded area, don't turn left at the
junction, don't turn off the road until you see a junction with
the Kingarth Hotel on the corner. Turn left here towards
Kilchattan Bay for 1 mile. St Blane's House is the only large
white house and is easy to find, it is just after the old pier in
the centre of the village. Plenty of parking in front of the
house. You can also park cars by the back door. Approx 15
minutes drive.

FOOD FACILITIES ON THE ISLAND

You will be able to find all the normal food items on the
island. It is important that you don't bring all of your supplies
with you because this is detrimental to the local economy. It
needs your support to survive.

shop.

ADDITIONAL HELP
I have used the house for my own parties and I have been
to friends parties in the house. Sometimes the host ends up
having to work quite hard and having to get up early to
unload dishwashers, washing up bar glasses and emptying
bins. If you too would like a holiday there is the option of a
local lady who knows the house and could pop in for an
hour and clear up before you have even got up in the
morning. 10 per hour payed direct to her by just leaving it
on the side and she lets herself in. Alternatively
I have noticed that large groups, who regularly holiday
together are very organised. They divide their group up
according to the number of nights and number of people
and each group is given a different night to be responsible
for. Some are even themed, which looks great fun.

PARTY

Another group took it in turns to create themed nights such

as 'By the Seaside' and had fish and chips that night.

Another group dressed as pirates and had a Murder Mystery

party.
WALKS
Lots of beautiful walks around the Island, details can be
found in the house folder. A fun option is to download the
GEOCACHING app. This is a treasure hunting website
where people have hidden a small container somewhere
and you follow the walk to find it. When you find it you write
your details in it. There are quite a few on Bute and one in
Kilchattan Bay.

stuck for anything then ask in here and if they don't have it
then they will be able to tell you who will have it.

KILCHATTAN BAY POST OFFICE

In Kilchattan Bay there is a small post office/general store/

anyone's guess! (It only opens on a Sunday in the summer

Baby and Toddler Facilities

There is a stair-gate for the bottom of the stairs. Each

stop a toddler going down the stairs. There are two stair-
gates available for the backstairs leading to the games
room, pirate bunk bed and yacht room.
Wooden cot in Marquis room. Please bring your own

put in any room. There are two high chairs.

Downstairs Facilities
To the left of the front door is a large dinning room to seat
25x it has a wooden floor and underfloor heating and open
fire. There is a carpeted area in the bay window with
armchairs and TV.
To the right of the front door is the lounge with the original
bar from when it was a hotel. ( The beer pumps no longer
work, but you can pretend!). There are numerous armchairs
and a log-burner. There are musical instruments around the
room which you are welcome to use. Also a karaoke
machine with discs and TV screen. The room has a tiled
floor with underfloor heating.
To the rear is a large kitchen with a dinning area, just off to
the left of the kitchen is a toddler play area with a door that
leads onto a patio and enclosed garden. To the right of the
kitchen is a dog area by the back door. The area contains a
sturdy, large dog pen 3.5m by 1m. It has an insulated foam
floor and old duvets for the dog/ dogs to sleep in. Don't
worry if they are damaged, I have lots more old duvets. A
divider can be used to segregate dogs. I don't mind well
behaved dogs staying in the house when you are out.
The kitchen is well equipped and has two electric cookers,
two dishwashers, two sinks, three fridges and a microwave.
Three filter coffee machines.
Remember when cooking for large groups that very full
ovens will need a longer cooking time. The electric ovens
work well but seem slightly underpowered, perhaps because
the whole house is powered by electricity it puts a drain on
them?

First Floor, front of building

There is a front lounge with two sofas, books and sea view.
BT Sport Channels.
First Floor, rear of building
Large games room with table tennis table, pool table, darts,
PlayStation3. TV. DVD player and DVDs, toys. Games
room also has a small kitchen and washing machine.

Outside buildings
There are two log stores and a small garden shed. The
large garden is fully enclosed. Lots of outside seating.
Fishing rods, golf clubs etc.

There is a small charcoal barbecue but visitors seem to

prefer the ease of the large tray barbecues I have for
purchase at the house. There are stone slabs on the tables
outside for these trays to sit on.

LOGS FOR FIRE

There is wood in the sheds for the log burner and open fire.
If you plan to have more than one fire please use coal for
the open fire. I have bought a few bags of coal from the
hardware store and these can be found in a room off the
kitchen 5.35 each.

SAFETY
1.Please be aware that the first six steps of the main
staircase in the house are very uneven. This is because the
house suffered major subsidence and when we repaired the
building we found that the left-hand side of the staircase
was held up by just a car jack!.
3.Fishermen with long rods should be aware that there are
overhead electric cables in the back land at St Blane's and
throughout Kilchattan Bay. Also when flying kites.
4. There is an abundance of wildlife on Bute, unfortunately,
less welcome is the Tick. It is a small spider like insect that
crawls ups( can't jump or fly) and finds blood to suck. It
buries its head under the skin and feeds its babies on your
blood. They grow in a pouch which then bursts to release the
babies. Yuk!! Dogs are the most vulnerable so I would
suggest that you buy tablets or a special collar to put on
your dog before you arrive, the tick then takes one bite and
jump off immediately.

BROADBAND
BT Fibre-optic cable broadband is available and has a good
signal.
There are a few dead spots in the house as you are further
from the router. The signal is strongest near the router which
is positioned outside the Marquess room on the first floor.
There is also an Access unit on the ceiling in the kitchen
dinning area which extends the signal to the back of the
house and has a strong signal here.
Password is ; stblanes01
The password has to be put in twice, once for the 'upstairs'
router and then also for the 'downstairs' router.

There is BT Sport on the first floor lounge TV.

Mobile phone signal is good at the front of the house. Signal is

lost at the back of the kitchen and games room.

BREAKAGES AND DAMAGE

The house has been designed to withstand children and dogs
running around and having fun. However, If there is any
damage that is more than just 'wear and tear', then it must
be paid for. I would really prefer holidaymakers to take out
the www.cottages4you.com insurance cover if possible
please, approx 35.
There are always ongoing general repairs in a house of this
size. I would be very grateful if you could leave me a note
highlighting any repairs or bulbs etc, that need replacing so
that they can be identified and replaced quickly before the
next visitors arrive. Some visitors have kindly done little
repairs. I am more than willing to reimburse any costs.
There is an honest box to put in money for any breakages
and also to leave money for coal.

BIKES
There are a couple of bikes which you are welcome to use
but please bear in mind that I don't have time to check these
between visitors. For your own bike storage, I do have lots
of sheds but unfortunately they are still rather full with left
over material after the house refurbishment. I do however,
have an back room near the back door that you could store
bikes in.
I would add that Kilchattan Bay is very safe with very little
theft.

WHEN YOU LEAVE

The terms and conditions of booking state that the property
has to be left as you find it. This helps to maintain the very
reasonable booking costs offered and there is also very little
time to do very much cleaning before the next visitors.
Please strip the beds that you have used and leave them in
the bags provided on the the landings. If possible open the
bedroom and bathroom windows a little so that the house
airs. No need to vacuum or mop floors, we will do that, but
mainly do please put back anything that you have used
during your stay.
Please leave any food that you don't want to take home with
you, it will be appreciated by the cleaning lady.

Please turn off the electric bedroom heaters and turn the
heating thermostats down to zero ( the thermostats is in the
hall, at the bottom of the stairs just above the shelf).

Grey wheelie bins are for general rubbish and are collected
Tuesday, ( Please pull out onto the pavement Monday). The
blue wheelie bin are collected every other Tuesday ( see
kitchen calendar).
Please don't forget to recycle just because you are holiday.
Waste is even more expensive to dispose of on an island. It
is so bad that locals are only allowed to put one rubbish
wheelie bin out every three weeks.

GLASS
No glass to go in bins, this is recycled in Kilchattan Bay.
Glass recycling bins can be found near the village shop,
behind a wooden, village notice board. If you don't have
time to do this then please leave glass in the glass recycling
boxes and bins provided in the house.

Sadly your holiday must come to an end. On the day of

departure you will need to leave at 10.15am. I hope that you
have a really, lovely time with your friends or family and that
you take with you some very happy memories of St Blane's
House and The Isle of Bute.
Floor layout to follow on the next three pages.
