Grade First Grade Topic Life Cycle of a Monarch Butterfly Content Area Science

INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES (s)

After watching the video butterfly, butterfly! and having a group discussion, students will be able
to identify the different stages of the life cycle of a butterfly while creating a KWL chart as a
class. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the life cycle of a butterfly with 70%
accuracy.

MOTIVATION (Engaging the learner(s)*)

Students will see the YouTube video butterfly, butterfly! once the video is over the teacher will
ask the students if they have any questions about the video. The teacher will also ask the students
How many stages of the life cycle of a butterfly are there? What are the names of each
stage? What happens during each stage?

DEVELOPMENTAL PROCEDURES
1. Students will begin the lesson by moving to the carpet to watch the YouTube video
Butterfly, Butterfly! The teacher will than ask the students to listen for the following
information during the video, How many stages of the life cycle are there? What
happens during each stage? What are the names of each stage? Students will watch
the video. Before the class watches the video the teacher will do a KWL chart with the
class completing the K and W section of the chart in front of the class.

2. Once the video is over the teacher will ask the students, How many stages of the life
cycle are there? What happens during each stage? What are the names of each
stage? Getting the answers from the students while they are still on the carpet, and
having a quick discussion about the life cycle of a butterfly.

3. Students will be allowed to nicely dance to the video while it is being played a second
time, once the video is over than return to their seats where the teacher will put up a
PowerPoint presentation about the life cycle of a butterfly.

4. Students will listen to the presentation being taught by the teacher, while going through
the presentation the teacher will be asking the students questions to check for
understanding of the material in the lesson. The teacher will ask questions like What are
the stages? How does the butterfly change throughout its life cycle? What happens
during the stage?

5. Students will be asked by the teacher Are there any other questions that anyone has
about the life cycle of a butterfly? Once all the questions have been answered the
teacher will than handout the life cycle of a butterfly.

6. Students will complete the L section of the KWL chart asking any additional question
they many have.

7. Students will be able to complete the life cycle of a butterfly hand out by cutting out the
different stages of the life cycle and gluing them in the correct order on their piece of
construction paper. After students have been working independently on their work, the
teacher will ask Who is finished with their life cycle? Once the finished students raise
their hands, the teacher is than able to pair up higher students with struggling students
who many need help.

8. Students will than give their completed work to the teacher who will than transition the
students into their next activity they will be doing.

Activity: Students will be completing the life cycle of a butterfly diagram.


Closure: Teacher will briefly go over the life cycle of a butterfly again, reviewing the
KWL chart.

ADAPTATIONS

For the students who have ADHD, they will be allowed to dance to the video when it was
played a second time.
Students who are hearing impaired will be seated in the front of the class and carpet area.

DIFFERENTIATION OF INSTRUCTION

Struggling Students
Struggling students will be placed in front of the class so the teacher is able to keep them
engaged during the lesson.

Average Students
Average students will be allowed to help those who are struggling around them once their work
has been completed.

Advanced Students

Advanced students will have to write something that happens during each stage of the life cycle
on the diagram they are completing.

ASSESSMENT
Diagram that is being completed after the lesson is being taught.
Rubric on the diagram
If students can answer the questions of the teacher correctly throughout the lesson.

INDEPENDENT PRACTICE
Teacher will assign the life cycle of a butterfly diagram for students to complete.
Students will answer complete a life cycle of a butterfly handout for homework.

Direct Teacher Intervention


Students will be able to tell what the different stages of the life cycle of a butterfly are. The
students will also be able to put the stages in the order they occur explaining each stage. Teacher
will be able to have students answer questions based on the lesson they have been taught.

Academic Enrichment
Having students can arrange the different stages of the life cycle. Students will able to see what
each the butterfly looks like in each stage, also being able to see them in each stage outside
during the spring and summer season.
