(a) What are the electric and magnetic fields for the TEM modes? (10 points)
Hint: The electric and magnetic fields for the TEM wave in an infinitely long
coax, propagating along the positive z-direction take the form

1. Electromagnetic Wave Propagation in a Plasma
(a) Please make a brief description of plasmas. (5 points)
(b) Assume the plasma to be made up solely of electrons and immobile ions, and the
motion of electrons under the influence of the wave electric and magnetic fields
constitute a current density, J=Neqev (where Ne is the steady density of electrons, qe is
the electron charge, v is the velocity phasor). From the time-harmonic Maxwells
equations and the equations of motion as below,
.
To derive H = jeff E, the effective dielectric permittivity, eff , given by

a positive constant; ; .

where 0=(k/me) , the characteristic angular frequency of the elastically bound
electron.
Assume Ne being the electron density (i.e. electrons per unit volume), to find the
polarization (i.e. the dipole moment per unit volume) and the relative complex
permittivity. (10 points)
(b) Sketch a qualitative curve to interpret the frequency behavior of the real and
imaginary parts of the permittivity. What does happen when the frequency
approaching the0 ? (5 points)

Under the far-zone field conditions, the contribution dEto the far-zone electric field
of each current element Idz along the antenna (see below chart) and the corresponding
far-zone magnetic field dH are given by the Hertzian dipole relationships as below,
