1. Please show that if (E,H) are solutions of source-free Maxwells equations in a
simple medium characterized by and , then the (E,H) also are the solutions
of source-free Maxwells equations, where
E=H and H=-E/

In the above equations, = / is called the intrinsic impedance of the

medium.(10 points)

1. Consider a resonator made of a section of coaxial line with length d and short
circuited with conducting plates at both ends as shown below.

(a) What are the electric and magnetic fields for the TEM modes? (10 points)
Hint: The electric and magnetic fields for the TEM wave in an infinitely long
coax, propagating along the positive z-direction take the form

(b) Let d = 10 cm. What is the lowest nonzero resonant frequency (which is
associated with the TEM1 mode)? (8 points)
(c) Plot the magnitude of the electric field and the magnitude of the magnetic
field as functions of z for the TEM2 mode. (7 points)

2. Consider a GaxIn1-xAs planar waveguide with a thickness d sandwiched between


two InP regions, as shown below.

(a) Find the maximum thickness dmax (in um) so that only the TE1 mode is
guided at = 1.65 um .(10 points)
If the thickness of the waveguide is d = 0.3 um, find the attenuation constant x in
the InP region, and the phase constant x in the waveguide. (15 points)

1. Electromagnetic Wave Propagation in a Plasma
(a) Please make a brief description of plasmas. (5 points)
(b) Assume the plasma to be made up solely of electrons and immobile ions, and the
motion of electrons under the influence of the wave electric and magnetic fields
constitute a current density, J=Neqev (where Ne is the steady density of electrons, qe is
the electron charge, v is the velocity phasor). From the time-harmonic Maxwells
equations and the equations of motion as below,

2. Frequency Response of Dielectric Materials
(a) A simplified equation of motion for the electron under the influence of the three
