A Brief History

The 1500s
The colonists first arrived on North American
the Native Americans already inhabited the
area. Conflicts were abundant as colonists tried
to establish settlements in Florida, the
Northeast area bordering Canada, the Virginia
colony, and the Southwest (AAA, 2016). Native
American's were considered savages and the
colonists worked to try and make the Native
American's more civilized (Siddiqui, 2017).

The 1770s

The English colonists began to


rebel against England and want
their own independence. They
still denied equal rights to Native
Americans and Africans. One of
the first casualties in this war was
Crispus Attucks, a runaway slave
who had African and Indian
parentage
1794

Eli Whitney patented the Cotton


Gin and slave labor increased
because cotton became such a
huge export. (History.com,
(2017).

1849

Harriet Tubman escaped from


slavery and began the Underground
Railroad to help other slaves escape
to freedom (Brunner, 2017).

1882

Chinese Exclusion Act was signed


by President Arthur, excluding
Chinese workers from entering
the country (Harris-Perry, 2009).

1889-Early
1920s

Between 50-100 lynchings took place


every year (AAA, 2016).

1954

Brown vs. Board of Education decides that


segregation in public schools is illegal
(Brunner, 2017).

2017
President Trump institutes travel ban
barring all immigrants and refugees
from entering the U.S. Afederal
judge in Seattle, ruled against the
travel ban and reopening the country
(Kulish et al, 2017).

Congress passed the Alien and Sedition Act which
allowed immigrants to be deported more easily and
made it

immigrants to obtain voting rights
(Harris-Perry, 2009).

1852
Harriet Breecher Stowe published
Uncle Tom's Cabin. This
book
provided a human
view of the
slaves which helped
to garner
support for the
abolitionist
movement. (AAA, 2016).

1863

President Lincoln issued the


emancipation proclamation, freeing all the
slaves (Brunner, 2017).

1942
1619 In February, Franklin D.
The first African slaves arrived Roosevelt authorized Japanese
in Virginia Internment Camps, following the
(Brunner, 2017). attack on Pearl Harbor in
December 1941 (Siddiqui,
Mid-1670s 2017).

The status of the African people began to


change. Those who had a chance for 1964
freedom following their servitude period,
now became permanent slaves in the Civil Rights Act Repealed (Harris-Perry,
colonies (AAA, 2009),
2016). For those who ending the segregation that was outlawed in
were Plessy vs. Ferguson (Brunner, 2017).
