Fellow Toastmasters,

It is with joy that I am writing a few words here to say ―Hello‖ to fellow-life-long-
learners in Division K.

It has certainly been a good learning experience for me to con-

nect with the many people who have happily contributed to the
contents within this bulletin. May I repeat ―good‖ :) - because I
have learnt how much each Area within the Division has done,
how much has been achieved, and from these pages, you will
see not only awards and trophies won but also how we Toast-
masters are such a bunch of fun-loving people who need no ex-
cuse to get together to create and share JOY! (Check out the
pictures!)

To serve you as the Division K Bulletin Editor was a responsibility bestowed upon
me at a surprising moment. However, I can only say that when the Opportunity is
before one, the choice to accept or not is a moment not to be taken lightly. It was
such a moment when I paused, and said ―Yes‖. With that ―Yes‖ then came the de-
tails of what entailed—and I wish to share with the next Bulletin Editor (whoever you
may be who will wish to stand up and be counted) — the task can be as light or as
heavy as we make it to be. The joy of putting things together as a record of achieve-
ment for the Division can be as high or as low as we make it to be.

After that ―Yes‖, I must say that I struggled with WANTING to do a good job, and
actually DOING a good job. But I am a Toastmaster, and I am proud to say that,
―Yes‖ I believe I have done it. I hope you think so too as you turn these pages.

there is still much to look for-

Annual convention in March
2010 (Area K4 will of course,
be performing at the Welcome
Night, come what may), the
District 51 Annual Convention
in Miri , May 2010 (which will
see the Official Birth of our new
District 87!) but most of all, for
Area K4, we look forward to
rising to greater heights before
the term ends.
It has been inspiring to see
more of a younger age group (in Ivy Fung ACB, ALB
Api-Api TMC) embrace Toast- Area K4 Governor
mastering and just as inspiring
to see the dedication of the
quieter clubs become not so
quiet. So, in the good hands of
those who serve—AG Ivy Fung,
Advisor Richard Gontusan and
the team with DvG Datuk Has-
san, what are we waiting for?

Environmentally
Friendly Meetings
How clubs can conserve energy and reduce waste.
As a global organization with members in 106
countries, environmental stewardship is a topic of
interest to many members. Participants in Toast-
masters meetings and conferences can take ad-
vantage of the following suggestions to reduce
waste and make meetings more sustainable:
Save paper by reducing printing. Cut down on pa-
per by using technology such as PowerPoint or a
laptop to display information on a screen. Or follow
the example shared by Linda Eenigenburg of Cary
Grove Toastmasters in Chicago, Illinois. She says
her club, like many others, recently decided to
eliminate printed agendas altogether. ―We write
out the agenda on one large sheet that gets posted
on the wall.‖
Will Hsiung, of the Arlington Heights Toastmasters
in Rolling Hills, Illinois, has taken it one step further
by using an enlarged, laminated agenda that they
can write on with a dry-erase marker at every meet-
ing.
The Positive Thinkers Toastmasters club in Vancou-
ver, Canada, writes their agenda on a white board
each week, but plan for the presiding officers to
use a printed agenda because ―otherwise they can
spend half the meeting either speaking to the
board or rubber-necking between the board and
the audience,‖ says member Debbie Forbes.
What about other materials, such as handouts or
announcements? Keep your club’s Web site cur-
rent with announcements. That way, members can
review information before the meeting and those
unable to attend can access the information. If
your club has a newsletter, consider saving money
and resources by making it available online. Many
clubs e-mail their newsletters. It’s a nice way to
keep in touch when some are too busy to attend
meetings.
Try texting. Some clubs are giving up paper ballots
in favor of using cell phones to text comments to
members about their speeches and to submit
votes to the vote counter.

Consider recycling. If you feel strongly in favor
of having printed agendas, announcements or
ballots, consider printing on both sides of the
page and use recycled paper and vegetable-
based inks. And bring – or ask your host venue
to provide – recycling bins for paper, metal,
plastic and glass. This way, you can easily recy-
cle any leftover materials at the end of your
meeting.
Also, remember to reuse or recycle any signs,
and take advantage of electronic bulletin
boards, if provided in your meeting locale.
