Purpose of Nursing Education

The basic purpose of nursing education is to prepare the nurse who, after completion of
the educational programme is able to plan for and give comprehensive nursing care and
health guidance to individuals and families according to their needs.
The nurse should be competent in teaching, oriented to community heath and research-
minded.
Nurses must have the necessary knowledge, principles, skills and attitudes which are
essential to professional nursing practices.
Nursing students must develop competent health team members with sound judgement,
intellectual and moral enlightenment, professional competence and expertise.
The nurse educators should guide the learning activities of students by acting as
facilitators.
The nursing education and training programme is to give a broad based preparation with
capacity building in students for doing the required nursing jobs with appropriate nursing
interventions.
The teacher should base their teaching on the nursing needs out of the real health
problems of the community and in accordance with the job responsibility.

Principles of Education:

1. Education is pervasive.

It involves everybody.
It is invasive and it is not just learning and forgetting.
A true learning involves the application of whatever learned whenever and wherever
necessary.

2. Education is goal-oriented.

Everybody learn to achieve certain goal.


The goal may differ based on individual needs.

3. Education is continuous process:

No limit for education.


Education starts in womb and ends in tomb.
We learn something everyday and every moment.
It is a life long process.

Any education cannot be rigid.


It is based on many factors especially the learner.
The educator should consider the individual differences.

6. Education is for all age groups:

Variety of education system like pre-primary, primary, secondary, higher secondary,


collegiate education, distance education are for different age groups.

7. Education is a group activity:

In order to learn at least two people are necessary.


It is the interaction between the student and the teacher.

8. Education is a social process:

Close cooperation of all the members are essential.


The aim of education is to prepare a human being to lead a happy life in the society.

9. Education is dynamic:

It is an active process, where the learner is actively involved in the process of learning.
The aim of education is to bring the desirable change in behaviour.
It is mostly a planned, purposeful and dynamic activity.

10. Education is multidisciplinary:

It draws its knowledge from many disciplines such as sociology, psychology,


anthropology, philosophy and humanities.

AIMS OF NURSING EDUCATION

1. Harmonious Development: Nursing education aims the harmonious development of the


physical, intellectual, emotional, social, spiritual and aesthetic powers or abilities of the
student thus prepare students as good human beings with qualities of a professional nurse.

2. Inculcating the right attitude: Nursing education offers a variety of learning experiences
with an aim to develop right attitude and motivate to achieve excellence in upcoming
professional life.

3. Knowledge and skill aim: It provides the much needed knowledge and skill required to
practice the profession in a successful manner.

4. Emphasis on high-tech- high touch approach: High-tech- high touch approach in


nursing care was developed to preserve the human component of nursing care without
undermining the advantages of technological advancement in the field of patient care.

5. Prepare students to take up a proactive role in learning: Nursing educators of today are
considered as a facilitator of learning whose main duty is to prepare the students to adopt
a proactive role in learning so that they will actively participate in the teaching-learning
process.

6. Professional Development: Easy access to information, availability of staff development


programmes and increased opportunities for higher education will help the nurse to
maintain the professional nursing.

7. Assist to build a promising carrier: Nursing profession offers a variety of carrier


opportunities. Helping the students to realize their potentials and interests will enable
them to maintain the professional development.

8. Social Aim: Nursing education prepares the student to become a useful member of the
society. This will in turn help them to interact effectively with the people and render
dedicated care without any discrimination.

9. Citizenship: Nursing education should motivate the student to perform his or her duties as
a citizen for the welfare of the fellow huma being.

10. To prepare global nurse: Globalization and liberalization has created worldwide
opportunities for professional nurses ever than before.

11. Leadership: Since nursing professional is experiencing a shortage of eminent leaders ,


leadership aim is very important.
