people, or historical figures. Who remembers some of the names?
(John Motley Morehead, Hezekiah Alexander, James Latta, Zebulon
Vance, and John Reed) Alright, so today, were taking a trip back to
1. Focus and Review old time Charlotte with some of these historical figures. Were going to
meet them and theyre going to tell us about what they did in history.
Except, theyre not here to tell us about what theyve done in history.
So today, were going to be John Motley Morehead, Hezekiah
Alexander, James Latta, John Reed, and Zebulon Vance.
2. Statement of Today we are learning more about historical people from around the 5 minutes
Objective for Student Charlotte, NC area.
3. Teacher Input So, we all know that we live in or around Charlotte, right? This school, 10-20
Morehead STEM Academy is in Charlotte, North Carolina. A few quick minutes,
facts about Charlotte: there are 2.5 million people living in and around
the city of Charlotte, Bank of Americas main headquarters is in
Charlotte, and its the third fastest growing city in the United States!
But without some of these people we will be talking about today,
Charlotte wouldnt be what it is today. For instance, Conrad Reed, the
son of John Reed, was just playing in a creek outside of the city and he
found a rock. Not just any rock: but a 17-pound rock that turned out to
be the biggest piece of gold ever discovered in North America! Wow!
Well also be talking about the impacts John Motley Morehead,
Hezekiah Alexander, James Latta, John Reed, and Zebulon Vance have
made on Charlotte and the surrounding areas.
4. Guided Practice Alright, now were going to learn some facts about these fine people. 10-15
But, instead of me just listing off facts for you guys, Im going to need minutes
five volunteers to act out these men. That means you cant just read
from the next few slides, but rather you have to pretend like youre
actually them. Understand? Using the SMART board, have facts listed
out about the important figures so that when the students are picked to
be a certain historical figure, they know what to say. Call on students
that want to come up to the front of the room and act out these parts.

For John Motley Morehead:

I was the 29th governor of North Carolina, but I was born in
Virginia.
During my term as governor, I supported the new public school
system, the need for more railroad lines, and stood for the
improvement of rivers.
I was a part of the Whig party, but the Whig party only lasted
from 1834-1854.
I graduated from UNC Chapel Hill. Go Tar Heels!
I was also a lawyer.

For Hezekiah Alexander

I was born in Cecil County, Maryland.
My father is said to be one of the seven brothers who migrated
to Somerset County, Maryland sometime before 1670. My
father is also an elder in the Presbyterian church.
I was a blacksmith, which means that I work with metal and
create objects out of metal.
My family and I were forced to flee from our home during the
French and Indian War.
I was named to the Salisbury district committee in 1775.
Following the Declaration of Independence, the council called
for a permanent government to be set in the state, and I was
elected as a delegate to this congress.

For James Latta

Im a Scotish Irish immigrant and I came to the United States in
1785. I was born on August 21st, 1755 in Northern Ireland.
Before I moved to North Carolina, I was a traveling merchant
and did most of my work in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
I gave up my merchant life in the 1800s, though, and started to
buy land instead!
My plantation, Latta Plantation, is the last remaining Catawba
River plantation open to the public. Its 62 acres big and I only
paid $600 for it!
We used my plantation to grow cotton and is now a living
history farm which you can visit.

For John Reed

I was an illegal immigrant and came from Germany all the way
to the backwoods of North Carolina. Thats a long way from
home!
I lived in Meadow Creek, which is in Mecklenburg County, and
immediately married and raised a family.
My son, Conrad, is actually the one that found the first gold
around Charlotte! It was 16 pounds! Also, get this: he sold it for
a small amount of $3.50! It was worth more than thousands of
dollars but he sold it for that much.
Thanks to my son, I opened Reeds Gold Mine in 1799.
However, since there were never really any manuscripts of my
life, a lot of the information on my life and my mine remains
unsolved.
In 1803, I had a small gold mining operation. Someone soon
found a 28-pound nugget of gold!
However, after my death in 1803, the American Civil War
decreased the mining activity due to the labor resources being
used up in the war.

For Zebulon Vance:

I was born on May 13th, 1830 in Weaverville, North Carolina.
I was a Confederate officer in the American Civil War and was
stationed in Raleigh, North Carolina.
I was both the 37th and 43rd Governor of North Carolina!
I was also a writer!
I practiced law in Charlotte, North Carolina in 1865 and had a
lot of interesting clients that needed my help!
I was in the Whig party along with John Motley Morehead. I
was also part of the Confederate party and also a Democrat, like
former President Obama.
A kahoot will be put up on the front SMART board. Students will be 30
guided on how to get to kahoot. Alright, now everyone we will be minutes
doing a kahoot game to check and see what you guys learned during
the lesson. First, I want you guys to go to Google. Give students time
to get to Google. Okay, now Google kahoot, spelled k a h o o t. The
first link to popup should be kahoot.it. Dont click it yet, wait for
everyone else to get here. Once everyone has gotten to the Google
search, ask students to click the link to bring them to where they need
5. Independent Practice to insert the kahoot ID number. Now, where it says insert ID number or

entered the code, press enter and it should bring you to a place to put
your name in. PUT ONLY YOUR NAME IN. If I see any
nicknames/funny names, your chromebook will be taken and you will
not get to play. Now, how you play Kahoot is I will give you a series of
questions and one of the answers will be right. Whoever gets the most
