BOMCategories
IntheSAPSystem,youcanuseBOMstorepresentdifferentobjects(suchasmaterials,
equipment,functionallocationBOMs,anddocuments)andtomaintainobjectspecificdata.Before
youcancreateaBOMforthecomponentpartsofanobject,theobjectmusthaveavalidmaster
recordinyoursystem.
ThefollowinggraphicshowstheobjectsforwhichyoucancreateBOMs.

MaterialBOM:BOMwithReferencetoaMaterial
Abillofmaterialthatyoucreateforamaterialisknownasa materialBOM intheSAPSystem.
TocreateamaterialmasterintheSAPSystem,youcanusethefollowingfunctions:

Material Create Immediately

Forthismaterial,thesystemcreatesamaterialmasterimmediately,soyoucanalsocreateaBOM
forit.

Material Create Schedule

Forthismaterial,thesystemonlygeneratesachangedocument.Thisiswhyyoucannotcreatea
BOMforthematerialatfirst.
Onlywhenyouactivatethescheduledmaterialdoesthesystemcreateamaterialmasterrecord.
ThenyoucancreateaBOMforit.
Thematerialmasterrecordcontainsdescriptivedatasuchasthesize,dimension,andweightof
thematerial,andcontroldatasuchasthematerialtypeandtheindustrysector.Inadditiontothis
usermaintaineddata,thematerialmasterrecordalsocontainsdatathatisupdatedbythesystem,
suchasstocks.
MaterialBOMsaremainlyusedtorepresentthestructureofproductsmanufacturedwithinyour
company.YoucanenterbothmaterialsanddocumentsascomponentsofthisBOM.Adocument
inforecordmustexistinyourSAPSystemforeachdocumentyouenter.

DocumentStructure:BOMwithReferencetoaDocument
Acomplexdocumentmaybemadeupofseveraldocuments,suchasaprogram,technical
drawings,papers,andphotographs.Theserelatedinformationanddocumentationobjectsare
groupedtogetherasaunitusingadocumentstructureaBOMforadocument.

EquipmentBOMsareusedtodescribethestructureofequipmentandtoassignsparepartsto
equipmentformaintenancepurposes.
SincetheseBOMsarelinkedtoequipment,theyareknownas equipmentBOMs.

InthestandardSAPSystem,amasterrecordexistsforeachfunctionallocation.BOMsofthis
categoryarelinkedtothesemasterrecords.Thisiswhytheyareknownas functionallocation
BOMs. AfunctionallocationBOMcancontainmaterials(PMstructureelementsanditems
relevanttoplantmaintenance)anddocuments.

OrderBOM:BOMwithReferencetoaSalesOrder
YouworkwithorderBOMswhenyouspeciallytailorthemaketoorderproductionofyourproducts
totherequirementsofyourcustomers.Inordertomeetthecustomerrequirements,salesorder
specificmodificationstovariousassembliesareoftenrequired.Furthermore,assembliesareoften
speciallyconstructedforaparticularsalesorder.
Theorderspecific,modifiedorcreatedBOMsaresavedwithreferencetomaterials,salesorders,
andsalesorderitems.BOMsofthiscategoryarelinkedtosalesorders,sotheyareknown
as salesorderBOMs or orderBOMs.
YoucancreateorderBOMsusingthevariantconfigurationaswellastheBOMprocessing
function.

Productionlotsforfinishedandsemifinishedproductscanbeplannedandmanufacturedusing
differentBOMs.Forexample,asubstitutedcomponentcantriggeratargetedcostcalculationand
evaluationperproductionlotduringtheplanningstage(beforesales.
ThenumberofaproductionlotisaWBSelementfromtheProjectSystem.Youusethisnumberto
planandmanufacturetheproductionlotforanassembly,andcalculatetheplannedandactual
costsforproducingtheassembly.
BecauseofthereferencetoaWBSelementfromtheProjectSystem,theseBOMsareknownas
WBSBOMs.
