a28288a5d9ce/kahoots/favourites
Exit ticket on what they learned about being a good friend and how their
attitude and actions affect those around them.
Meeting the student where they are:
Prior Knowledge/Connections:
(After hook)
Ask students if they have a friend.
Ask them how they know that person is a friend and how they show that person
they are a friend to them.
Ask students if they can list some characteristics of a friend
Ask students if they have ever had someone say hurtful things to them and
how did that make them feel
Ask students if they have ever said hurtful things and how they think it made
that person feel

Lesson Introduction/Hook:
Apple activity to introduce cause and effect with bullying (10-15 min)
o Show the students 2 apples
o One has been thrown on the ground and bruised and one has not.
o Show the students that the apples are the same on the outside but tell
students I really dont like this apple, lets say mean things to it and
insult it. For the other apple I will tell students I love this apple, it has
done a great job, let's praise this apple. After the students have
insulted the one apple and praised the other apple I will cut them both
in half and show students the effect bullying has on other people.

Heart of the Lesson/Learning Plans

Differentiation/Same-ation:
I will be sure to place students in groups that encourage positive collaboration
For those that require accommodations...
o I will read-aloud instructions for each activity to the entire class
o I will place ESL students within groups that aid in communication
Lesson Development:
Hook: Apple activity
Discuss friendship and bullying and how it affects those around you
(explain that they are a community)
I DO: Read Because Amelia Smiled
WE DO: Discuss how the events are sequenced and have students predict remainder
of the story
1. Talk about the idea of cause and effect as it relates to the text
2. Explain to students that they have the power to make a difference in the world
by being joyful just like Amelia
YOU DO:
Center 1: Put students into groups and have them create a Friendship Pie by
following instructions and using what they learned about cause and effect and
sequencing related to peoples feelings.
Center 2: Play Cause and Effect Kahoot as a group (formative assessment 1)
Exit ticket (formative assessment 2):
Have students reflect on our discussion about how our actions, attitudes and
comments affect others around us. Have students write one thing they will
work on in order to help improve classroom community and build stronger
relationships in order to create a positive learning environment.

Another poster for the cause and effect anchor chart
Friendship Pie Worksheet (20)

Teaching Behavior Focus:

Teaching Practice:
Teaching students to make sense of concepts by using a logical order and
systematic thinking.
Teaching students the ideas of cause and effect and sequence of events.
o Relating that to how they can make a difference by being kind

Follow-Up Activities/Parent Involvement

Have students go home and talk to their parents about ways they can impact
others through cause and effect
o Have students take notice of ways those around them influence them
Have students record one thing that they witnessed that
impacted their attitude that day and bring it in to discuss
Sharing these ideas will show students how easy it can be to
change the world one step at a time
