Letter from Henry Clay (Presidential Candidate and Bank Supporter) to

Nicholas Biddle (President of the Second Bank of the United States)
December 15, 1831

My dear Sir:

Have you come to any decision about an application to Congress at this Session for the renewal of your [Bank]

Charter? The friends of the Bank here, with whom I have conversed, seem to expect the application to be made.

The course of the President, in the event of the passage of a bill, seems to be a matter of doubt and speculation.

My own belief is that, if now called upon he would not negate (veto) the bill, but that if he should be re-elected

the event might and probably would be different.
