Unit 2 Data Display Project

Objective: Students will be able to represent data accurately through histograms and box-plots.
Students will summarize data and compare/contrast two data sets using:
Center (mean & median)
Unusual/extreme data points & the possible effects
Spread (range, IQR, & standard deviation)
Shape

The world around you has lots of information that can be represented numerically and questions
that can be solved through analyzing data. The purpose of this project is to pose a question
about a topic that interests you and, using your data, investigate the answer.

Some possible topic ideas include the following:

Comparing one baseball teams batting averages to another teams batting
averages (look at any of the major sports leagues website for data values). Which team
is the better hitters?
Compare average snowfall in Colorado over the past 30 years to average
snowfall in Montana. Where is snowier to live?
Compare crime rates of 30 cities in the U.S. to 30 cities in Europe. Is it safer to
live in the U.S. or Europe?
Compare per capita income of 30 states in the U.S. to 30 countries in Africa. How
much more money do we make in the U.S. than in Africa?
Compare unemployment rates of men to women over the past 30 years. Are
there more unemployed men typically?

Some useful websites are listed in Symbaloo at: https://www.symbaloo.com/mix/cmic1

Your data should include a minimum of 30 data points and remember to cite the source from
which you collected your data.

You will be completing this project with a partner. Together, you need to decide on a topic as
well as a question of interest and get them approved by your teacher.
