Workplace safety is always a concern in the eyes of both employers and employees.

Construction is considered one of the most hazardous industries, suffering from high injury
and fatality rates among various industries. According to the statistics from the Ministry of
Manpower, a worrying trend has been observed, where construction industry alone
constitutes a significant percentage of workplace fatal injuries. The construction industry
continued to prevail in the share of fatal injuries, accounting for more than 40% of the fatal
injuries from the year 2012 to 2014 (Ministry of Manpower, n.d.).

Past studies have appeared to agree that occupational injuries and fatalities in construction
industry are attributable to individual personality traits. Personality of individual workers is
identified as one of the underlying risk factors that contributes to the occupational accidents.
However, inconsistent discovery eventually resulted in lack of uniform evidence of predictive
link between those two (Salminen, S., 2004). According to the study by Clarke and Robertson
in 2005, the common personality factors that contributes to workplace accidents can be
summarized into five major personality dimensions; extraversion, neuroticism,
conscientiousness, agreeableness and openness (Clarke, S., and Robertson, I., 2005).
Furthermore, studies have proven that personality evaluation could help to prevent and
eventually reduced occupational accident due to dangerous operation by the workers
(Christian, M.S., Bradley, J.C., Wallace, J.C., and Burke, M.J., 2009).

While studies have been done proving a strong linkage between psychological factors and
occupational accidents, it remains ambiguous as to how construction workers personality
affects their safety behaviour.

The focus of this project is to study the correlation between Singapores construction
workers personalities and occupational accidents through the application of Eysenck
Personality Questionnaire (EPQ). Due to the nature of bar benders work, involving strenuous
physical activity and are often subject to poor ergonomic conditions, questionnaire will be
developed and distributed to 200 bar benders working on nine different construction sites in
Singapore to further understand this relationship.
