Motivation of individuals is composed of two


largely unrelated dimensions

Hygiene : Factors that prevent dissatisfaction


but do not influence employees to grow &
develop
Motivators : Factors that encourage growth
and development

Such Motivation is brought about by external


factors like money, bonus, commission etc.

People perform until immediate needs are met.

Motivation is not long lasting

Advantages:
Job is done quickly
Performance Improves in the short run
Meets deadline

Disadvantages:
Causes stress
Performance just meets requirements
Destroys creativity
Performance falls in the long run
More & more pressure is required to get same job done.

Internal Motivation

This is the inner satisfaction in having done


something worthwhile.

Internal motivation is everlasting because it comes


from within and is transformed into self-motivation.
INTERNAL MOTIVATION - II

Recognition - A sense of belonging, appreciation,


treating with respect & dignity.

Responsibility - Feeling of ownership, becoming part


of the bigger picture.

He / she is full of drive and energy

Here the person is effective but not motivated

He / she is stagnant

Performance is marginal

Make work interesting

Be a Good Listener

Help but do not do for others what they can do for


themselves.
