Introduction

Carbon cycle was the cycle that important to the ecosystem. Carbon was used to made

many different types of goods, also used in the factory. Furthermore, carbon was included in

the important process of life called Photosynthesis. Photosynthesis was the process that

used Carbon Dioxide, sunlight, water and converted to be Oxygen and glucose. However, if

this planet didnt have carbon in the atmosphere, then all living organisms will die. In this

planet there was a huge amount of carbon. The amount of carbon in the atmosphere was

depended on amount of living organisms and non-living matters. For example, the plants that

were placed in sunlight will have the different amount of Carbon that the plants that were

placed in shadow because the Photosynthesis will not occur if there was no sunlight, so the

plants that were placed in the shadow will have different amount of Carbon from another.

In this experiment, the purpose was to measure and compared the amount of the

carbon in the ecosystem that stayed in sunlight and the ecosystem that was in the shadow.

This experiment showed the amount of Carbon Dioxide from making the duplication of

ecosystem. The hypothesis was if the ecosystem that place in shadow, then that ecosystem

will have more carbon than place in sunlight.

Material and Method

As students, the creators of this experiment view carbon as an interesting thing to

study. Carbon, as the said experimenters perceive, plays a major role in the photosynthesis of

plants. If photosynthesis was a pizza, carbon would be dough. That comes to a conclusion

that carbon is constantly used by plants to create the process of photosynthesis. In order to

prove that statement, the experimenters put two plants at different places: with more sunlight

and with a completely lightless condition.

The experiments processes can be explained with the following sentences. First, the

experimenters formulated and equipped the materials used to create this experiment, which

are: four empty one-and-a-half-liter-water-bottles, scissors, a roll of scotch tape, a cutter, two

trees of fern, two seaweed, gravel, water, soil, gauzes, and an aluminum wire. Second, the

experimenters separated the bottles into pairs, cut the top and bottom part of a bottle from

each pairs, and cut another bottle from each pairs at the top part. Then, inserted the top part

with the bottom part and taped the two together at the bottom of the bottles that was cut both

parts, put the soil inside the bottles from each pairs that was cut first, and put the land plants

inside each bottle with soil. After those steps, the experimenters washed the gravel the was

gathered with clean water, put the washed gravel inside another empty bottle of each pairs,

and poured the fresh water inside another empty bottle from each pairs. After that, the

experimenters put the aquatic plants inside both bottles that were filled by gravel and fresh

water. Then put both bottles with land plant on the top of both bottles that had aquatic plant,

and sealed it with scotch tape. After sealed it, cut a hole in the top part ecocolumn that

planned to put in the place that had sunlight, and cut the top part of ecocolumn that planned

to put in the shadow place, but do not cut the top out from the bottle for detachable part to

measure amount of carbon.

Result

This experiment was to test that sunlight effect to carbon in atmosphere in what way.

Collected the data by measured the carbon inside and outside of both ecocolumn by using lab

quest. The first data from observation of carbon in atmosphere was 193ppm. The carbon

amount in ecocolumn that was place in the sunlight area was 226 ppm and another

ecocolumn that was place in the shade area was 305 ppm. The second data from observation

of carbon in atmosphere was 115 ppm. The amount of carbon in the ecocolumn that was

place sunlight area was 159 ppm and another ecocolumn that was place in shade area was 225

ppm. Thus, from the first observation, ecocolumn that was place in the sunlight area had

lesser amount of carbon than the ecocolumn that place in the shade area. And in the second

observation of ecocolumn that place in the sunlight area also had lesser amount of carbon

than the ecocolumn that place in the shade area.

Discussion

If the ecosystem that place in shadow, then that ecosystem will have more carbon

than place in sunlight was the hypothesis that made for this experiment. The hypothesis was

supported by the result from the experiment. The ecosystem that was placed in the dark area

had the larger amount of Carbon Dioxide that the ecosystem that was placed in the area that

had sunlight. Based on the lecture in environmental science class, the plants used sunlight,

water, and Carbon Dioxide to made the energy, so the ecosystem that had plants that were

able to used sunlight to produced energy going to had less amount of Carbon Dioxide in the

atmosphere. There were lots of weakness and mistaken things in this experiment, first, the

lack of materials for the experiment and unprepared condition of the group members to the

experiment, for example from the experimental day, one of the group members forgot to

brought the materials that was already discussed in team to the day that started the

experiment, all group member forgot to prepared the role for each other. Second, lack of

teamwork and group discussion to prepare the experiment, for example, all of teammate

forgot to remind each other to brought work log the record what was done in the experiment.

Third, irresponsible and did not concentrated on the experiment, for example, one teammate

recorded the wrong number into the work log of experiment. Forth, the experiment project

nearly failed, because lack of focus to do the experiment so the plants inside the ecosystem

died and the water became polluted from dead plants. Fifth, the whole experimental project

had to be redone. The group member had change the soil to be the new fertilized soil, planted

the new plants inside the ecosystem carefully not to damage the stem of the plants, and

removed the polluted or unclean water from the ecosystem, and cleaned rocks and stones

from the dirty ecosystem, and pour the clean fresh water into the ecosystem, and returned the

cleaned stones and rocks to the ecosystem, and then planted the another new plants to the

ecosystem. In the future, the things that could be improved to this experiment was working
harder on the experimental project, prepared and be ready for the experiment, upgraded the

skills of team, reminded each other not to forgot anything and be prepared, bought good

material, had a discussion and planned before working or doing the project.

The conclusion of the experiment was that the amount of carbon in the atmosphere

would be large if that atmosphere in the ecosystem that stayed in the dark area or no sunlight

places. And the amount of carbon in the atmosphere would be less or small if that atmosphere

in the bright area or the places that had sunlight. The amount of carbon also depended on the

number of the plants in that area or ecosystem. As suggestion of future experiment, be

prepared about material and had a discussion carefully with the group member or teammate,

always reminded each other not to forget anything and concentrate and took care of the

project, also test another factor and observed more and be careful while testing the project.
