Surface Areas
Purpose: Students will be able to review how to calculate the area of triangle, rectangular, circle.
And then students will learn about surface area of rectangular prism, triangular prism and
cylinder.

Materials used:
-Handouts
-mini whiteboards +markers
-Math interactive book
-Cardboard rectangular & triangular prism (tissue paper boxes) cut it open for students to
understand
-Cardboard cylinder thing (toilet paper roll) and cut it for students to understand the surface area
- PowerPoint

Instruction: (underline: questions to ask students)

1 Opening: (20 mins)
-introducing the lesson objective and review of the area formulas for rectangular, triangle
and circle, and then play a game, show students questions on the PowerPoint, and ask
students to write down their answer. (students are given some basic area problems;
exceptional learners should be able to work on them)

2 Main activities: (30 mins)

-Ask students to brainstorm the rectangular prism & cylinder & triangular prism
they can find at home. Example: toilet paper rolls, cups, water bottle, battery, tissue
box, toblerone chocolate

-Cut out a rectangular prism & cylinder & triangular prism and measure them
together with the class.

-Explain of how to calculate surface areas for rectangular prism, triangular prism,
and cylinder, do one questions of each with students.
3 Closure: (10 min)
-On the worksheets given, students are asked to work on two questions to challenge
themselves.

Lesson Plan Reflection:

1. Preparation and Research Was I well prepared? What could I have done differently?
-I feel that I am not too well prepared, I need to prepare more for the exceptional
learners.
2. Written Plan Was I organized? What did I learn that will help me in the future?
-I was organized, I need to explain things more clearly, find super easy understanding
questions for students to do.
3. Presentation Were the students involved? Was I clear in my presentation? How was
the pacing?
-There were only few students involved, I think I was not very clear in my presentation,
the pacing was okay, but students were a bit confused.
4. Assessment What did the class do? How do I know if they were successful? What
should I change for next time?
-The class did little review on perimeter & area, I think it was not very successful
because people are a bit confused, and I overestimate the class because I thought the
class already learnt this, therefore, it should be a little review for them to do. For the next
time, I would prepare many questions to work/practice on, and I would find an easier
way to explain the theory.

Next in class, teacher will be introducing about how to find composite

object surface area, teacher will explain specific on overlapping!
