Course Description
In considering the complexities involved in community practice, students will assess individual, social, economic, and political influences that
contribute to the ongoing development of professional identity. Students will reflect on their Professional Engagement experiences to critically
analyze their own socio- political context, and how this connects to their emerging professional identity.
Course Outcomes
Successful completion of this course will enable the student to:
1. Assess individual, social, economic, and political influences that contribute to the ongoing development of professional identity
2. Explore the construction of professional identity
3. Analyze ones own professional experiences and the relationship to their emerging professional identity
4. Discuss role clarity and the connectedness to interprofessional community practice
5. Articulate beliefs, knowledge, and values that connect to the development of professional identity
6. Appraise oneself as a learner and the diversity of one's own learning experience in relation to understanding to learning contexts
Unit Outcomes
Successful completion of the following units will enable the student to:
1.0 Understanding the Construction of Professional Identity
1.1 Describe the relationship between relevant concepts like self and identity
1.2 Identify the characteristics of professional identity
1.3 Describe the significance of role clarity in relationship to professional identity
1.4 Examine the meaning of professional in professional identity
1.5 Describe the process of professional identity formation
1.6 Examine the relationship between values and beliefs in context of professional identity formation
1.7 Define the concept of professional identity through a multidisciplinary lens
1.8 Examine research on professional identity formation using a multidisciplinary approach
2.0 The Socio-political Context
2.1 Identify social, political, cultural, and historical factors that contribute to the construction of professional identity
2.2 Identify the potential influence of emerging trends in early childhood policy and practices for early childhood professionals
2.3 Describe factors that influence the construction of identity such as training and education, membership and professional
affiliation
2.4 Describe how professional identity is negotiated in context of social interactions
3.0 The Influence of Professional Identity on Professional Practice
3.1 Examine one's values and beliefs and the interrelationship to understanding oneself as a professional
3.2 Examine discourse used to describe professional identities in the field of education
3.3 Describe the role professional identity has on educational practices
3.4 Examine the influence of externally imposed definitions of professionalism on the construction of professional identity
3.5 Examine the relationship between learning and experience on professional identity
3.6 Discuss the continuous process involved in constructing, deconstructing, and reconstructing of professional identity
3.7 Describe the significance of role clarity in relationship to professional identity
3.8 Articulate the value of having a strong professional identity
