Course Description
This course will focus on deepening an understanding of citizenship and citizenship participation within Canadian and global contexts.
Students will examine and analyze dynamic social and political conditions which influence the development of policies relevant to child
education and community programs. Students will identify, analyze, and critique policy and the policy development process for mitigating
factors that affect the developmental health of individuals and communities. Emphasis will be placed on democratic citizenship, human rights,
children's rights, voice and active participation as engaged citizens in contemporary society.
Course Outcomes
Successful completion of this course will enable the student to:
1. Analyze demographics, globalization, and technological change and their effect on individual and community well being
2. Assess the relationship between theory, practice, and policy within the context of child education and community programs
3. Explain the role of leadership, advocacy, and policy as a vehicle to engaged citizenship
4. Examine policies relevant to child education and community programs within the context of the current political climate
5. Analyze policy and policy development framed through the lens of human and childrens rights
6. Critique policies through the lens of developmental health and well being
7. Propose strategies to build capacity for active participation and engaged citizenry
8. Explain the importance of population-focused programs in relation to the creation and sustainability of healthy communities
Unit Outcomes
Successful completion of the following units will enable the student to:
1.0 Foundations of Engaged Citizenship
1.1 Examine different meanings of engaged citizenship
1.2 Explore how discussions of engaged citizenship relate to ideas of participatory democracy, civic engagement, citizenship
education, and politics
1.3 Analyze the role of leadership and advocacy in engaged citizenship
2.0 Foundations of Social Policy
2.1 Define the concept of social policy and its relation to child education and community programs
2.2 Identify key government policies related to social policy, engaged citizenship, and human rights
2.3 Analyze the various roles of government (municipal, provincial, federal, and international) in creating social policy
2.4 Analyze the effects of key social policy items on child education and community programs
3.0 Engaged Citizenship and Social Policy in Action
3.1 Discuss the relationship between social policy and engaged citizenship
3.2 Critique various social policies through the lens of childrens rights, human rights, and healthy communities
3.3 Assess how demographic and technological changes are influencing social policy and engaged citizenship particularly related
to child education and community programs
3.4 Propose practical suggestions for policy change informed by theories of engaged citizenship and social policy
