The library observed is Sandtown Middle School located at 5400 Campbellton Rd, SW.
Atlanta, Georgia 30331. Sandtown was built in 2004. The school currently has a population of
846 students. The school provides services for grades sixth through eighth. The library is housed
in the center of the school which gives students and teachers easy access. There are windows on
each side of the media center which allows natural sunlight to come through. The school has not
had any major renovations since opening up 2004. There have been minor alterations to the
building over the past few years. The minor alterations consist of repainting, new flooring and
The media center is in need of a renovation due to the obsolete equipment and interior set-up.
It is old and needs to be surplus, especially, the sofa, love seat and chairs; it is big and bulky.
The students still have to sit at the wooden rectangular tables and chairs, which are low to the
ground like an elementary setting; very uncomfortable. There is not enough space to
accommodate more than one class. Although the media center has the square footage, it is
compact due to the bulky furniture and large amount of space the nonfiction book shelves occupy
on the floor. The desk top computers need to be updated and upgraded. Half of them rarely
works. They do not have enough iPads for a class set. Nor are there enough e-books for students
to check out. The e-books that are in circulation are old or no longer interesting to the students.
When entering the library there are tables and chairs on each side of the entrance. The tables
are there for additional sitting. After passing the table the computer station is on the left. There
are 16 desktops total for students to come in and complete assignments. Teachers may also, book
this area for small group research. Next to the computer station is a kiosk for students to check in
their damaged laptops. The circulation desk is located slightly to the left. The storage room, the
media/production room and the teacher work space are all located on the left side of the media
center. Behind the circulation desk to the left are two tables with chairs. The magazine shelf,
periodicals and professional books are also housed neatly on the shelves. As you walk away
from that section the fiction books begin on the left of the wall and wrap around to the back wall
stopping near the exit door. The nonfiction book shelves begin on the right. There are two
sections with four rows each of nonfiction books. There are three round tables in a row for
additional seating. There are two blue chairs on the back wall in the front of the fiction section
wall reading. Across from the fiction section are the easy books and below the windows are the
biography books and then the reference section. The media specialist office is located next to the
reference. There is a big blue couch and love seat in the center of the media center for students
across from to sit and read comfortably. There are enough tables in the library to accommodate a
classroom as well as a small group. There is also a white board located near the biographies used
by teachers and administration when conducting classes and meetings. With everything moving
rapidly towards technology there is a serious need to upgrade this media center so it can be more
conducive to learning. An updated library will help the day flow more efficiently.

Facilities Floor Plan
I propose to get rid of all the hard wooden tables and chairs and replace them with bar top table
with the outlets and comfortable chairs. I also propose new comfortable chairs for the entrance
waiting area. I would like to create a welcoming high school or college environment.
Weeding out some old books and removing a couple of shelves will open up more space. This
will allow students to move around more freely and create a maker space for students. Weeding
This open area would provide enough space for staff meetings with a mobile promethean board.
Updated books and materials mean students will have accurate information when searching for
resource materials. More e-books will be available for student to check out on their devices.
I propose that a more modern look consist of a warm and inviting space for students to feel
