Physical Education
-Students will be able to identify a skip, jump, and hop.
-Students will be able to perform a skip, jump, and hop.

Language Arts
-Students will be able to state the difference between a prefix and a
suffix.
-Students will be able to identify whether a word is using a prefix and
suffix.
-Students will be able to determine the meaning of a word by using the
prefix or suffix
and the root.

Equipment Needed: PowerPoint with literal and literally speech examples

Modifications: For students who have a difficult time hopping, skipping, and
jumping, they may only do complete each skill for three seconds (or however
long they feel comfortable with) per question. For students who have a hard
time processing oral information, I will also write the phrases up on the
board. If skipping is a challenge, students may walk from one side to the
other.

Progressions:
**Students have already learned how to jump, hop, and skip. However, the
differences between the three of them have not been discussed. Before the
activity, I will model, as well as have students model, the steps of a hop,
skip, and jump to review.

Jump
1. Start by bending your knees.
2. While your bending your knees, swing your arms.
3. After you bend your knees, lift your feet off of the ground (jump) while you
swing your arms out.
4. Once you land, bend your knees.
5. Practice all of the steps together to create a jump.
6. Jump with a partner five times each.
Hop
1. Stand up straight.
2. Lift one leg off of the ground and bend slightly at the knee. While
completing the hop, this foot should always remain off of the ground.
3. Hop with the other foot.
4. When you land, bend the hopping leg slightly.
5. Practice all of the steps together to create a hop.
6. Hop with a partner 5 times each.

Skip (Steps taken from my skipping fundamental lesson plan)

1. Start with hopping only, changing the foot you hop with
2. Step with one foot.
3. Once you step, take a baby hop
4. Now, step with your other foot.
5. Once you take a step with this foot, take another baby hop
6. Keep doing this step-hop-step-hop pattern to practice.
7. Skip with a partner 10 seconds each.

Activity:
1. In order to learn what prefixes, suffixes, and root words are, I will present a
PowerPoint presentation. This PowerPoint will have definitions and examples
of prefixes and suffixes, as well as the written rules of the activity.
2. After teaching the students about prefixes and suffixes, I will introduce the
rules and directions for the activity. The directions are:
A. I will put a sentence or phrase up on the board and read it aloud.
B. Once I put a sentence up on the board, you will
a. skip to the right side of the classroom if you believe that the
word has a suffix.
-Once you get to the right side, you will jump for ten
seconds, counting out loud. Be sure you are performing
the skill correctly.
b. skip to the left side of the classroom if you believe that the
word has a prefix.
-Once you get to the left side, you will hop for ten seconds,
counting out loud. Be sure you are performing the skill
correctly.
C. After each group hops or jumps for ten seconds, I will reveal whether
the word has a prefix or a suffix. I will pick a student to tell me what
the root and prefix or suffix is, as well as the meaning of the word.
3. I will put five to ten more examples up on the board. Repeat the directions
in step two each time and be ready to explain why you chose either prefix or
suffix.
**Examples for Board:
-Your hair looks beautiful today.
-Can you please redo your paper?
-The girl was fearful of the spider in the classroom.

Closing Activity:
After the activity is over, I will pose several questions to the class for
discussion. The questions are: What did you learn by doing this activity?
What are the differences between a hop, skip, and jump? What is the
difference between a prefix and a suffix? Did you like the activity? Why or
why not?

Once I am confident that the students know the difference between a hop,
skip, and jump, as well as prefixes, suffixes, and root words, I will conclude
the discussion.
