Making a KWL chart of apples- Monitor comprehension, sets a purpose for reading

Learning Objectives:
1. The children will verbally communicate what they already know and what they want to
know about apples.
2. The children will practice using the appropriate circle time classroom rules.

 Instructional Strategies
What will the teacher do?
1. Teacher will gather all the students on the
rug for circle time and a large group
activity.
2. Teacher will create a KWL chart on the
whiteboard so that it is visible to all
children.
3. Teacher will introduce apples by asking
students what they know about apples,
including any terms, words, or phrases.
Each student will get a chance to talk.
After each student has had a chance, any
student may raise his/her hand if they
have more to say.
4. Teacher will record what students know
about apples under the K column in the
KWL chart.
5. Teacher will ask students what they want
to know about apples or what they think
they will learn from books and the field
site visit. Each child will get a chance to
talk. After each child has had a chance,
any student may raise his/her hand if they
have more to say.
6. Teacher will record what students want to
know about apples under the W column in
the KWL chart.
7. Teacher will explain to students what the
L column will be used for- the L column
will be filled out once the class has read
texts and had a field site visit about
apples.
Learning Tasks
What will the children do?
1. Children will gather on the rug for circle
time and a large group activity.

teacher creates the KWL chart on the
whiteboard.
3. Children will verbally identify what they
know about apples, including any terms,
words, or phrases. Each child will get a
chance to talk. After each child has had a

4. Children will quietly listen and watch as
the teacher records what each student
knows about apples under the K column
in the KWL chart.
5. Children will verbally identify what they
want to know about apples or what they
think they will learn from books and the
field site visit. Each child will get a

Assessment Strategies:
The teacher who is not leading the KWL will take anecdotal notes/observational records
about how students are responding to the questions asked and how well they are listening
to their peers.
Modifications:
No modifications need to be made academically for this activity. If a student doesnt wish
to participate, they dont have to. Since this is an oral activity, all students should be
encouraged to participate but dont need to be pressured to if they dont feel comfortable
doing so. If they work better in small groups, they can put their ideas in during small
group time one on one with the teacher so it can still be written on the chart for everyone
to see.
