Introduction

The research paper presented here is a report on the topic Unwanted phone Calls. This

topic is about the unnecessary phone calls that some people purposely make to disturb or

harass others. This type of practice is visibly increasing in our society at the present.

In this research paper I have focused on the significance and magnitude of the problems

caused by unwanted phone calls. My study relates the impact of such calls on individuals

as well as on the society. In my study I tried to find out what individuals think about the

reasons of the problem and also the impact of the problem on them and on the society.

The topic itself represents the significance of the issue. At present in the young

generation this type of practice is very common in our society. Increased use of mobile

phones and also increased availability of mobile phones (as well as other means like land

phones) have made it a culture in the young generation to call and search for a person of

opposite sex to have a chat over the phone. For such acts young girls and boys face

irritating situation while receiving these calls. As it has become a culture in the young

generation, it is also affecting our social values in a negative way.

This research paper is based on the affects of such phone calls on individuals and on the

society. Pointing out the troubles caused by such unwanted phone calls, the aim of my

study is to raise public awareness about the significance of the problem so that people put

attention to stop performing such an annoying practice.

2. Background:

Unwanted phone calls have been very familiar to all groups of individuals. From youth to

the adult, everyone face such phone calls more or less.

However, this type of calls is very common especially in the young generation. The

people who make such calls simply seek for chances to flirt with people of opposite sex

over the phone as a way to pass their time. The sufferers who do not want to talk to the

person face further tension of getting miscalls or disturbing messages over the phone.

Such turbulences cause wastage of time, mental disturbance and other tensions to the

victims.

Some people, however, make such calls to harass previously selected person. Such

annoyance may be aimed even at sexual harassment. They use vulgar and indecent

language with their sick mentality to sexually harass the victims. This sort of nuisance

cause severe mental disturbance to the victims that sometimes affect their lives in a

serious way.

Unwanted phone calls therefore, have strong root as a serious problem to the sufferers.

However, there are also people who respond to such calls gladly and like to flirt or talk

with the caller. Their response encourages the person who makes such calls and such act

result even to a serious relationship; love relationship or a relationship of friendship.

Although many such serious relationships proved to be successful, such acts are having

impact on the society. By making it a new culture to flirt over the phone this type of

practice is degrading our social values and standards.

2
To illustrate the significance of the problems created by such prank calls some cases are

presented bellow. (The names of the characters are imaginary in all the cases)

2.1. Cases:

Case 1:

Sania is a 20 year old girl studying at a private university. One night she was studying for

the exam next morning while she had a call from an unknown number on her cell phone.

After receiving the phone a guy from the other side let her know that he wanted to talk to

her and make friendship with her. Sadia politely said that she is simply not interested to

talk to him and cut the phone. Immediately the guy called again and this time Sadia told

him that she had an important exam next morning and requested him not to call her again.

But the guy kept on calling her and every time Sadia had to cut the call. At last she had

no other way than to put the cell phone off while she needed to have the phone turned on

because her friends would call her to discuss about the exam.

Case 2:

Rifat, a 23 years old guy, dialed an unknown number one day just to pass his time. When

he found that the number is of a young girl, he started to flirt with her. The girl, however

was not disturbed, she was rather amused by this and also started to flirt with him. Their

conversation included cheap jokes and just words after words without any grounds. Rifat

knew that he hardly wanted to make any friendship with the girl and also the girl knew

that she is just flirting with him. Such flirting over the phone reflects their cheap thoughts

and brought no result for them except wastage of their time and money.

These cases represent the different situations create by prank calls. These situations form

strong ground for the problems created by such calls.

As we see that unwanted phone calls have a strong background as a problem in the lives

of the young generation, from my study I found some rules regarding such phone calls.

Bellow is the law regarding such phone calls.

2.2. Law regarding unwanted phone calls:

Under section 70 of Bangladesh Telecommunication Laws it is stated that

If a person calls another person in such a way that it creates disturbance to the

second person, then such act should be considered as a crime. The guilty therefore,

would be charged to pay Tk. 25,000 at most or would be sent to jail for up to 3

months.

So, we see that there are strict punishments for disturbing people by making unwanted

phone calls.

[I found the laws in a magazine. Please see work cited.]

3. Research Scope

In my research on unwanted phone calls I focused on the significance of the problems

created by such calls. When I started to do the research I wanted to find out who faces

such problem most and who the people behind making such calls are. Also I wanted to

focus strongly on the effect of such calls on individuals as well as on the society. In my

research I tried know how individuals response to such calls and what intention they hold

toward the people who make such calls. Besides, I was very interested to know what they

think about the effect of such calls on the society. Also I wanted to ask their opinion on

the possible solution of the problem.

Another aspect of my research is to find out the laws or rules against the people who

make such phone calls and bother the victims over the phone. In this part my main

objective was to finding out the extent to which the laws are used against the guilty. I

wished to do this to realize how much public awareness regarding the law we have in the

society.

While investigating for the paper I came to find a lot of information about the reasons

why people make such calls, the impact of such calls on the people etc. following are the

research areas of my study.

1) Who faces the problem of unwanted phone calls most?

From my study on the problem I found that basically the young group of people faces the

problem of unwanted phone calls. People of age group of 15 to 25 are the most of the

victims of this practice.

5
2) Who are the people who make such calls and what are the reasons behind making

such calls?

Basically two types of people make such calls -

People who are emotionally frustrated and have nobody to share their feelings:

These people usually do not have enough good friends so that they can share their

feelings with someone. So, they get their selves engaged in such practice out of

frustration.

People who have sick mentality:

The intention of this category of people is to bother others by calling them. They

make such calls simply because they want to pass their time flirting with a person

of opposite sex. Some people also make such calls t sexually harass others by

using vulgar words.

3) What effect does the problem have on individuals?

Such phone calls cause psychological disturbance to the victims. Most of the victims feel

very disturbed after receiving these calls. These calls are not only wastage of their time

but also they divert their mind from what they were doing. Most importantly, the victims

who are sexually harassed over the phone feel scared because of insecurity and also

undergo sever mental disturbance which is harmful for them.

6
4) What effect does the problem have on the society?

As some people like responding to such call, their reaction encourages the callers who

make such calls. I think this is affecting our society negatively because our social values

are changing gradually by this. Such flirting over the phone is of no use for the society, in

fact it degrades our personal as well as social values.

5) How can the problem possibly be reduced?

The possible solutions for the problem are first of all to arise public awareness about it in

our society so that people know about the negative sides of making such calls. Also

phone companies can take certain steps to save consumer rights. Moreover, parent can

make sure that their children have the right type of friends so that they do not act this

way. Most importantly, I think increased use of law should be adapted to reduce

unwanted phone calls.

The answers of the above questions are the body of my research paper. My findings are

based on these questions that helped me to construct the paper.

However, as I proceeded to do the research paper, I found it very difficult to investigate

about any law against the people who bother others over the phone. Also, surprisingly, I

found that the people who studied law are confused about the existence of any law

against the guilty in the context of Bangladesh. Although I was able to acquire some

information about the concern of people regarding the laws, I could not find anything to

what extent these laws are applied.

7
4. Hypothesis

I did my research based on the assumption that most of people, regardless of being a boy

or a girl, do not like answering unwanted phone calls. I also think that the victims face

severe mental disturbance during and after answering to such calls. My assumption

extends as I think that the victims also hold negative intention to answer such calls.

I also assume that the act of making such calls have negative impact on our society. As

some people happily answer these calls and also flirt with the person from the other side,

I think such acts not only decrease personal values of the persons involved but also affect

our social values in a negative way.

8
5. Research Methodology

To do my study on the topic Unwanted Phone Calls much research needed to be

conducted. My focus was to look at the grounds for the problem and to find out the

significance of the problem as well as to get different views of people about what they

think regarding this problem. Finding out the possible ways of reducing the problem was

another main focus of my study.

To reach to all my target findings I divided the research methodology based on two types

of information. These are 1) primary information and 2) secondary information.

Following is the discussion on the methodology that I went through to prepare my

research paper.

5.1. Secondary Information:

As I started finding background of my research topic, I focused on the informative means

like news papers, magazines etc. I looked for articles related to the topic of unwanted

phone calls or prank calls. Also I studied different law books to find out the existence of

any law against the people who bother others over the phone.

My research topic includes a very recent sort of problem. When I started doing the

research I found that there has not been enough investigation to find out the reasons of

the problem or even to raise public awareness about the significance of the problem.

However, I got much information from some magazines which helped me to do my

research.

9
5.2. Primary Information:

To gather primary information first of all I conducted a survey on a young group of

people. In this purpose I conducted the survey on 30 people among whom I included both

girls and boys. In my sample group for the survey there were 14 boys and 16 girls. My

survey included young girls and boys in the age group of 18 to 25 who face the problem

of unwanted phone calls most often. In the survey questionnaire I included 13 questions

asking their opinion about the impact of the problem on individuals as well as on the

society, the seriousness of the problem and the ways to reduce the problem.

To gather primary information I also interviewed three persons among whom two were

girls and the other was a boy. I took their interview as they were the victims of such calls.

In the interview I heard interesting stories from them which helped me to bring strong

ground for my research paper.
