Standard Operating Procedure Adjusting

Drawworks Brakes

1. Purpose
The common thread throughout the SOP and HWD Policies and Procedures in general is
the identification of responsibilities. This manual is intended to clearly and concisely
identify the steps required by employees to complete any given operation in a manner
that is consistent with Horizontal Well Drillers standards. It will document progressive
steps required in sequence that are to be followed, an authorizing company department or
position, and an author that is to be consulted if there are questions in any portion of the
SOP standards.

3. Prerequisites
Personnel are required to wear proper personal protective equipment, follow job safety
rules, and have the appropriate experience and certifications to carry out their job
functions satisfactorily.

4. Responsibilities
Tool pusher will have ultimate accountability and will personally oversee and complete
this procedure. It is very important that this procedure is completed to the highest degree
of diligence and with that in mind the Tool Pusher is required to check and double check
that following this procedure is completed and the drawworks brakes operate to
specifications.

5. Procedure
1. Prepare for adjusting draw works brakes.
Lower the top dive to set onto the stoppers in the derrick.
Lock out the draw works before inspecting the brakes.
Chain down the brake handle and install the lock.
Function the crown saver but do not reset it.

2. Inspect the brake linkage.


Remove the guards to access the brake bands and equalizer bar.
Inspect the brakes each tour during rig service.
Make sure the following items are checked:
Open the inspection doors and look at the spacing and even spacing on the equalizer

bar.
Look at all cotter keys and make sure that they are all in place and secure.

Check the linkage pins and the brake linkage.

Inspect the brake bands and verify the proper spacing around the rollers.

If spacing is out on the rollers, notify the Rig Manager.

Once the inspection is complete, the Driller must notify the other workers before
the lockout is removed the draw works is re-energized.

3. Adjust the brakes.


When everyone and everything is all clear, remove the lockout on the brake handle
chain.
Reset the crown saver.
Adjust the brake handle height by adjusting the nuts at the equalizer bar.
Work the brake handle up and down a couple of times.
Chain down the brake handle.

4. Inspect the equalizer bar.


Make sure that the spacing is equal on each side of the equalizer bar between the
bar and nuts.

5. Adjust the equalizer bar.


Adjust the spacing on the equalizer bar with the spacer nuts.
Once the spacing is equal, hammer up the lock nuts.

6. Test the brakes.


Apply the brakes to make sure that the brake handle is at the proper height and the
brakes are applying properly.
Visually inspect the drill line.
Function test the crown saver on the very first connection or first stand that is handled
following the start of the shift.
