Due Friday 3/31/2017 (students may write directly on this handout)
Problem 1 The truss is supported by a pin joint at H and a roller at G. A force F=100
N acts at A.
Part 1: Sketch triangle GAF and calculate the angle GAF and CAB using trigonometric
methods (note that these angles are the same). Sketch triangle GHF and calculate angle
GHF using trigonometric methods.
Part 2. Identify the five zero force members in this truss without performing any calculations. If finding one zero force member
allows you to discover another one, note that in your answer. Draw the FBDs of the relevant joints that allow you to identify the
member. ( Example: Draw FBD at joint C; note the zero force member, THEN draw joint B with the zero force member eliminated or
marked with a dotted line)
Part 3. Solve for AB and AC using method of joints. Identify if the members are in tension or compression. Is it necessary to
calculate support reactions first?
Part 4. Solve for BD, DF, and FH using method of joints. (Hint: start with joint B, then move to joint D, then joint F). Identify if the
members are in tension or compression. Is it necessary to calculate support reactions first?
Part 5. Solve for CE and EG using method of joints. Identify if the members are in tension or compression. Is it necessary to
calculate support reactions first?
Problem 2 The bar shown is supported by a hinge at point O and a cable
AD attached at A. The weight of the bar can be neglected. A force F acts
at point B. Use the F specified in your version of the exam: either
F={ 5 i12
^ k^ } kN or F={ 2 i12
^ k^ } kN
