Optimization of the feature

counters are used to monitor the various kinds of events or messages exchanged on common control channels
supported by the extended CCCH and are placed in the Abis interface, the A interface, and the Gb interface. The
events or messages that are exchanged are given below against their corresponding common control channels:

Paging Channel (PCH)

Downlink channel carrying paging messages coming from the A & Gb BSC interfaces.

Access Grant Channel (AGCH)

Downlink channel carrying access grant messages coming from the BSC.

Random Access Channel (RACH)

Uplink channel carrying channel request messages coming from a mobile phone.

The presence of this feature is indicated through various positive scenarios:

The successful paging rate counters register a higher or a constant value, when seen from an MSCs point
of view.

Statistics show a significant increase in the number of successful pagings, because some cells are able to
manage a much greater amount than before with only one extended CCCH, when seen from a BSC's point of
view. The unsuccessful counters (003005, 003038 and 072086) are observed to be remaining at nil or
significantly lesser than before.

The BTSs configured with more than one extended CCCH register greater numbers of successful call
attempts handled by pagings.

The following counters are used in feature optimization:

003005 DELETE IND MESSAGES RECEIVED FROM BTS

If the BTS discards the Immediate Assignment (IMMAS) message due to CCCH overload, it sends the Delete
Indication Abis message.

003038 DELETE PAGING COMMAND

A CCCH Load Indication message is sent periodically by the BTS informing the BSC about the status of
control channels from BTS side. This counter indicates if a group-specific paging queue becomes so full that
an additional paging command cannot be stored to the buffer, and the paging command is deleted. The BSC
extends this behavior and checks if any of the CCCH Load Indication message occurrences for CCCH 1, CCCH
2 and CCCH 3 indicates the overload condition.

072086 PACKET IMMED ASS NACK MSG

The BTS sends the BSC a negative acknowledgement for all the AGCH messages that are deleted from TRX
buffers because of buffer overflow, maximum lead-time expiry, or expired starting time. The negative
acknowledgement is sent immediately after the message has been deleted.

High counter values indicate the need to increase CCCH capacity. Very low values may indicate that too much CCCH
capacity is configured.
