Part VI- Putting It All

Together
What is happening for children at this developmental
age in our district
Physical
Mandatory recess- every day
Physical Education once per week- with a highly qualified teacher
Nash Parks and Recreation/Rocky Mount City Parks and Recreation
- low fees for play
- character building
- emphasis on sportsmanship

Cognitive
Saw the humor and ability to question
- Passionate about various topics
- Follows verbal directions better than written, but still understands written
- Helped by pictorial clues

Self Concept, Identify, Motivation

- Loved to work on the video
- Loves being with his older sister- holding hands at the end of the day
- Enjoyed being on the swings
- Associated from group to group

Peer Relations/Moral Development

- No issues being with sister
- Sensitive to feedback- will respond much better to positive (I liked this, I bet
you can do this better if you tried this).
- Can occasionally shut down if spoke to negatively. TONE IS KEY
- Role of teacher helper/line leader/calendar switcher is a key motivator to
encourage positive behaviors

Language and Literacy Development

- Sarcasm went undetected
- Lots of one word answers, but if passionate about a topic, will talk at length
- Rambling, disjointed thoughts
What is needed/missing from our district to support
our kids needs.
1. Physical
Additional emotional support- from peers and adults
- building capacity to empower students from even a young age
- Immersion into print to build the capacity
- With the introduction of current legislation, we hope to keep the necessary
physical education courses
Inclusion of Nap Time to allow students to rest and recuperate after play in order to allow
students to engage fully in the material
- National Center for Biotechnical Information cites a study by Sara Mednick
that napping improves a preschoolers ability to learn
o Recognize issues with current curriculum load
- Concern about children falling- results in safety and maintenance of
playground issues
o Identifying ground surface and objective to provide for safest
environment

2. Cognitive
Most of instructive rules/safe guards are in print, not images
Requires re-teaching and reinforcement to provide for the safety for all emerging
readers
Pictorial clues are a great benefit- using Mr. Potato Head pieces

3. Self Concept, Identify, Motivation

Are teachers providing sincere and plentiful positive reinforcement and feedback
to help children grow emotionally and academically?
Concerns about providing young children with older role models (4th-5th graders)
Exploring new materials/equipment could be highlighted by maker spaces

4. Peer Relations/Moral Development

Professional Development for New and Old Teachers
Providing effective methods to coach kids
Allow students to identify strengths and weaknesses and let them work towards
their goals

5. Language and Literacy Development

Currently many positives at our district
- Doing a strong, comprehensive programs
- 90 minute literacy block starting in kindergarten
- Guided reading- iReady and Reading 3D
- Multiple opportunities for assessment
Possible solutions would be to have small class size
Conclusion
As with all comprehensive, full scale evaluations, we realize that success in one

particular area can come at the expense of another. At NRMPS we strive to educate the

whole child and allow them to grow physically, mentally, and emotionally. We know that

real world learning for real world living requires additional resources that the community

often has available, but sits unused due to a failure to build positive relationships within

our business community. In order to develop our students fully, we will make effort

possible to provide inroads with those businesses that will undoubtedly be searching for

future employees.
