A high c.g.p.a. is very helpful, but in the past students with a lower c.g.p.a have also gone abroad for
further studies.

GRE score

>1350
Prepare for a minimum of one month to get a high score. It is the shortlisting criteria followed
by top universities.

Projects / Minor Electives/ Foreign University Interns/ Industrial Training

Explore options to decide on your interests

Intern in good universities (foreign) helps in getting some cultural exposure, gets you a
recommendation from foreign university professor
Publications and patents add a lot of value to your application
Projects under institute professors get you recommendations
Doing research intern for 2-3 months & getting something productive results out of it helps
Participating in social welfare programs offered by NGOs reflects healthy social participation

Statement of Purpose

Explaining your interest in the field, the work you have done so far in that field and what
research you would like to do in the same field
Takes a lot of time to write
Refer past year students sops

Recommendations from professors (at least three)

Approach the Profs at least 2 months in advance.

Universities attach more value when professors mention more about you & his work experience
with you at least such one detailed recommendation is required for a student to get an app.

PhD:

5 years (4 yrs if you are very lucky)

Purely research
Requires lot of commitment
Funding:

Masters in Structures- Funding is not very good.

Masters in Environmental/ Hydraulics- have very good funding
Transportation- Very good funding
Geotechincal excellent future opportunities

But this doesnt mean your area for app should depend on funding, you should always pursue
higher studies only on your area of interest.

What 2nd years need to do?

Those not having passport yet must apply for it this summer.
1st identify your area of interest and consider the field in which you want to app (e.g.-
structure/transportation/etc.)
Takes electives/ minors relevant to that particular area
Decide aping to what level? (as in Masters/ PhD)
Take up projects

How to get foreign interns?

Advertisement coming in student portal

Directly approaching profs through websites
Build Conties/ ask insti profs for help in approaching foreign profs
Best way is to work in a project under an institute professor and then take his help while
applying to a foreign university internship
Be very specific about your area of interest in the mail to the foreign university professors
